2. Remove the front wheel.
3. Clean the steering gear in the anther area.
4. Holding the end of the rod with an open-end wrench, release the locknut and disconnect the rod from the tip.
5. Unscrew the rod from the steering mechanism using a VAG1332 torque wrench and a VAG1923 head (see resist. illustration). If corrosion, damage, wear or traces of dirt are found on the linkage, as well as if there is no visible film of lubrication, it is necessary to replace the steering gear assembly.
17.5 Removing the tie rod
6. Remove the steering gear boot and lubricate the steering rack in the area of the teeth (And on the opposite illustrations) and on the thrust plate with grease G052 192A1 from the repair kit. To do this, turn the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.
17.6 Lubrication points
7. Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead position and lock it. Place new clamps and boot on the rod.
8. Screw the rod onto the rail (see illustration 17.5) and tighten.
9. Press the rubber boot (2 to resist. illustrations) for draft (1) as far as it will go, making sure it is in the correct position. Secure the boot with clamps.

10. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order. Finally, apply the basic settings for the G85 steering angle sender.
