1. The steering gear assembly parts are shown in the accompanying illustration. The following describes the removal and installation of the steering rod.

4 Dust cover, do not twist it after adjusting the convergence
5 Clamp, subject to replacement
6 Steering gear rod, 100 Nm

2. Remove the front wheel.

3. Clean the steering gear in the boot area.

4. Holding the end of the tie rod with an open-end wrench, loosen the lock nut and disconnect the tie rod from the end.

5. Unscrew the rod from the steering gear using the VAG1332 torque wrench and the VAG1923 head (see accompanying illustration). If corrosion, damage, wear or traces of dirt are found on the rod, or if there is no visible film of grease, the steering gear assembly must be replaced.

6. Remove the steering gear boot and lubricate the steering rack in the area of the teeth (And on the accompanying illustration) and on the thrust plate with grease G052 192A1 from the repair kit. To do this, turn the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.

7. Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and lock it. Place new clamps and a boot on the rod.

8. Screw the rod onto the rack (see illustration 17.5) and tighten.

9. Press the rubber boot (2 on the accompanying illustration) onto the rod (1) until it stops, making sure it is positioned correctly. Secure the boot with clamps.

10. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order. Finally, apply the basic settings for the G85 steering wheel angle sensor.
