Steering rod — removal and installation (Skoda Kodiaq NS7)

Removal

1. Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.

2. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the front wheel.

3. Clean the surfaces on the steering gear housing around the steering rod boot.

4. Loosen the tie rod end lock nut while holding the tie rod end from turning.

5. Loosen the nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Do not unscrew the fastening nut completely.

6. Unlock the mounting clamp using a special tool (VAG 1275). Move the spring clamp onto the steering rod.

7. Loosen the clamp securing the boot to the steering gear housing.

8. Move the boot along the steering rod from the steering gear housing.

9. Using a special key, unscrew the steering rod from the steering rack, as shown in the figure below.

Note:

• If, upon inspection of the steering rack, rust, any damage or traces of dirt are found, the steering rack must be replaced as an assembly.
• If there is no lubricant on the steering rack, the steering gear must be replaced as an assembly.

Installation

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.



1. Place the boot together with the clamps on the steering rod.

2. Screw the tie rod into the end. Screw in the rod until dimension "a" is 373±1 mm.



3. Tighten the steering rod using a special key and a torque wrench as shown in the figure below.



4. Place the larger mounting clamp, boot and small spring clamp on the steering rod.

5. Screw the steering rod into the tip up to the mark made earlier during disassembly.

6. Tighten the lock nut (3) to the required tightening torque, while holding the tip from turning.

7. Apply a thin layer of special lubricant (G 052168 A1) to the place where the boot contacts the steering rod.

8. Move and install the boot (2) onto the steering rod (1) as shown in the figure below.



9. Using a special tool (VAG 1275), secure the small spring clamp securing the boot to the steering rod.

10. Apply a thin layer of special lubricant (G 052 168 A1) on the contact surface of the boot with the steering gear housing.

11. Install the boot onto the steering gear housing until it stops.

12. Secure the boot clamp to the steering gear housing using the special tool (VAS 6199), as shown in the figure below.

Tightening torques for threaded connections

Fastening the steering rod to the tip	70 Nm
Fastening the steering rod to the steering rack	100 Nm
Fastening the tie rod end to the steering knuckle Always use a new fastening nut after disassembly. Prevent the steering tie rod end pivot pin from turning	20 Nm + additionally tighten by 90°
