For vehicles with front wheel drive
Remove rear seat. Release retainers of cover -1- of connecting flange from retainer using wedge -3409-arrows-. Disconnect connector -1- from fuel pump.
Vehicles with auxiliary heater
Unplug connector -2- for auxiliary heater metering pump.

Press mounting -2- upwards in -direction of arrow A- by placing your finger between the body support and fuel tank. At the same time, carefully pull fuel pump control unit -J538- -1 - out of clip using wiring harness -3- -arrow B-. Remove fuel pump control unit -J538- between fuel tank and support.
Clean the area around the filler neck. Unscrew filler cap -arrow-.
Remove the right rear wheel. Remove the rear right fender liner. Unscrew screws -1 and 2- securing fuel filler neck.
Detach vent hoses -1 and 2- from canister. Disconnect ventilation hoses from bracket -arrows-.
Detach ventilation hoses -1 and 2- from bracket -arrows-. Remove the rear muffler.

Detach breather hose -3- and fuel line -2-.
Note: On vehicles with auxiliary or auxiliary heater, the fuel line -1- of the metering pump -V54- must also be disconnected.
Attention! The fuel tank is heavy - risk of accident. The fuel tank must be empty when removed. Before removing, mark the mounting position of the mounting clip.
Release screw -4-. Remove bracket for exhaust system. Remove screw -2- and remove clamp.
Place the engine and transmission jack -VAG 1383 A- under the vehicle to prevent it from hanging out and support the fuel tank on it as shown in the figure. Release screws -1 and 3-.
Tilt the fuel tank to the side appropriately and lower it. At the same time, pull out the filler neck with the help of a second mechanic.
Installation
Check both earth connections for corrosion and clean if necessary.. Check the mounting position of the ground wire. With the help of a 2nd mechanic, guide the filler neck between the rear suspension and the body. Then place fuel tank on engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383 A-. Installation in reverse order. Ventilation and fuel lines should be laid without kinks. Do not confuse supply and return pipelines (reverse - blue, serving - black). Ensure reliable connection of pipelines. After installing the fuel tank, check whether the pipes are fixed to it.
