- when starting off, add gas only after the cable has become taut.
- when starting off, release the clutch pedal especially gently.
Driver of the towed vehicle:
- turn on the ignition to prevent the steering wheel lock from becoming jammed and to enable the direction indicators, horn and windscreen wipers to be turned on.
- disengage the gear or set the selector lever to position N for an automatic transmission.
- remember that the brake and steering boosters only work when the engine is running. If the engine is not running, you must apply significantly more force when pressing the brake pedal and when servicing the steering mechanism.
- make sure the towing rope remains taut at all times.
Tow rope and tow bar
The most careful and safe way to tow your car is with a towing rod. Use a towing rope only if you do not have a suitable towing rod.
To avoid excessive shock to both vehicles when towing and starting the engine by towing the vehicle, the towing rope used must be made of elastic material. Therefore, use only ropes made of artificial fiber or similar materials
Attach the towing rope or towing bar only to the towing eyes intended for this purpose.
Driving technique
Towing vehicles requires a certain amount of skill. It is necessary that the drivers of both vehicles become familiar with the specifics of driving when towing vehicles. Inexperienced drivers should not tow another vehicle or drive the towed vehicle.
When towing, always ensure that both vehicles are not subjected to excessive towing force or impact loads. When towing vehicles on unpaved roads, there is always a risk of overloading the fasteners on both vehicles and damaging them.
Attention: If the gearbox has lost oil due to a malfunction, the vehicle can only be towed with the drive wheels raised and transported on a special vehicle for towing faulty vehicles or on a trailer.
Note
- When towing a vehicle and starting the engine by towing a vehicle, observe the different legal provisions in certain countries, e.g. regarding the marking of the towing and towed vehicle.
- The towing rope must not be twisted, otherwise the front towing eye could, under certain circumstances, be pulled out of the vehicle.
