The independent front suspension is based on MacPherson struts and L-shaped lower arms connected to the subframe. Available with aluminum or steel subframe (see illustrations 1.1a-b). The steering knuckle assembly is shown in Illustration 2.1 of Chapter 8. The anti-roll bar counteracts body roll and promotes better contact of the front wheels with the road when cornering. The shock absorbers, connected to the body and steering knuckles, consist of a coil spring and a gas-filled shock absorber.

The steering system consists of a steering wheel, a steering shaft, a rack and pinion steering mechanism and a steering gear. The steering wheel with built-in front driver airbag is mounted on a shaft that transmits steering movements to the steering gear. The steering column switch assembly is installed behind the steering wheel. To maintain contact between the airbag and the SRS control unit when the steering wheel is turned, a coil spring is used that can twist and untwist. The coil spring consists of a tape with internal conductive tracks. The steering column can be adjusted for both reach and tilt.

To make driving easier, the car is equipped with a 3rd generation electromechanical power steering with two leading gears. A separate transmission is added to the simple steering mechanism, acting on the steering rack and driven by an electric motor. The torque sensor on the steering shaft, acting on the steering wheel with the steering angle sensor, is located in the steering gearbox. Communication is carried out via the CAN data bus. The advantages of this design include:


  • low energy consumption (the booster only uses energy when it is actually working, when the steering wheel is turned);
  • hydraulic components fall off (pump, lines and power steering reservoir);
  • minimal transmission of impacts to the steering wheel (for example, when driving on an uneven road);
  • low noise transmission to the vehicle;
  • the "active return" function helps return the wheels to a straight position

When performing repairs or servicing of suspension and steering components, problems often arise with loosening "stuck" bolts and nuts. The fastening elements located under the bottom of the car are constantly exposed to external influences and over time they corrode and partially deteriorate. Using brute force to loosen such a "stuck" fastener carries the risk of damaging it. First, wet the non-removable element with a small amount of special penetrating liquid (for example, WD-40), allowing it to soak into the rust layer well. Use a wire brush to remove external deposits from accessible areas of threaded surfaces. Sometimes a sharp blow with a hammer on the nut through a drift helps to destroy the rust filling the gaps between the threads of the threaded joint - try not to damage the threads as a result of the drift coming off. Using a long handle when loosening a "stuck" fastener allows you to significantly increase the applied torque, but it should be remembered that using extensions in a set with ratchet-type drives is associated with the risk of failure of the return mechanism, as well as the possibility of injury. Self-locking nuts and fasteners damaged by corrosion or removal during repairs must be replaced without fail. Welding and straightening are not permitted on bearings that carry loads and on suspension components that guide the wheel.

Since most of the procedures described in this chapter are performed on a vehicle raised above the ground, you should take care in advance of options for securely fixing it in a raised position - prepare strong supports. To jack up the vehicle, use a hydraulic rolling jack - remember that the standard onboard jack is only intended for temporary jacking of the vehicle when replacing a broken wheel. A hydraulic jack can also be used to lift some suspension components while performing a particular procedure. Before carrying out any work, secure the vehicle to the lift legs using safety belts.

Attention: It is not permitted to carry out work under a vehicle that is held in a raised position only by means of jacks!
