5-pin diagnostic connector
16-pin diagnostic connector on late models
Location of the 5-pin diagnostic connector - indicated by the arrow
Contacts C and E for connecting the LED.
Pins A and D for jumper or button connection.
The 5-pin connector is located on the bulkhead of the engine compartment, next to the electronic control unit. Models manufactured after August 1993 may use the 16-pin OBDII 2nd generation connector located in the cabin. In this case, to read the codes by the tester, you must use the VAG1551/3 adapter cable.
Reading Flash Codes
To read the flashing codes, connect an LED between pins C and E of the connector (+ to E; - to C). Switch on the ignition and bridge terminals A and D of the connector for 4 seconds.
Read the 4-digit flash codes from the LED flashes.
The value of each digit corresponds to the number of flashes lasting 1 second. except 0 which corresponds to one flash lasting 2 seconds. Thousands of codes are transmitted first, units are transmitted last. Between discharges - a pause of 2.5 seconds.
To retrieve the next code, bridge the above contacts again, and so on until code 0000 appears, indicating the end of the output, or 4444 - no fault codes.
Disconnect the wires and turn off the ignition.
To delete codes from the memory of the unit, it is enough to disconnect the negative cable from the battery for at least 5 seconds.
To read codes using a scanner, follow the menu of the device.
