Steering
The car is equipped with an electromechanical power steering rather than a hydraulic one, which simplifies steering maintenance and reduces fuel consumption. The amplifier's electric motor operates only when needed. The gain depends on the vehicle speed, steering torque and front wheel steering angle.
The amplifier only works when the engine is running.
To assist the driver in skidding, the power steering has a reverse steering function, also called Active Steering Support (DSR). This function consists of creating additional force to help the driver turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid.
Note: This feature does not control the vehicle without driver intervention.

To monitor the status of the power steering and steering column lock mechanism, use the corresponding indicator lamp in the instrument cluster (see Section 13).
"Offroad" mode
The "Offroad" mode combines the functions needed for off-road conditions: assistance when starting off, anti-rollback system, EDS Offroad, ASR Offroad and ABS Offroad. The "Offroad" mode is switched on/off using the "
" in the instrument cluster (30 in illustration 12.1). When the function is turned on, the indicator in this key lights up, as well as the "
" in the instrument cluster. The "Offroad" mode is also switched off when the ignition is turned off. If you turn off the ignition while the "Offroad" mode is on and then turn it on again within 30 seconds, the "Offroad" mode will be turned on automatically.
Start-up assistance is a function that increases comfort when driving a vehicle. By controlling the engine, the crankshaft speed is limited to the optimum level for starting the movement, even when the gas pedal is fully depressed. This way you can start moving by fully depressing the gas pedal. An integral part of this feature is an adjusted characteristic of the gas pedal, which further facilitates acceleration on slippery and unsecured surfaces. The rev limiter is switched off by the engine management system once the starting process is complete. This function is activated when the "Offroad" mode is turned on when the vehicle is stationary.
EDS Offroad and ASR Offroad are variants of the regular EDS and ASR functions (see Section 24), adapted for earlier and more effective response when driving off-road.
ABS Offroad is a variant of the regular ABS system (see Section 24), adapted to increase the braking effect on unpaved surfaces and to increase the wheel locking time if this occurs when braking while driving in a straight line at a speed of less than 50 km/h.
The hill descent assist function limits the vehicle speed when driving downhill (both forward and backward) by automatically braking all four wheels. Wheel locking is excluded, since ABS remains active. On models with manual transmission, the speed is limited so that the crankshaft speed does not fall below idle speed. The speed is limited to a value from 2 to 30 km/h (in any DSG modes except "P", as well as in neutral gear of the manual transmission). In 1/2/3 gears of the manual transmission, the speed is limited to approximately 8/13/22 km/h (accordingly, the exact value depends on the type of manual transmission and engine) up to 30 km/h. The driver can change the speed within these limits by pressing the gas or brake pedal. In this case, the function's operation is interrupted accordingly and then, if necessary, resumed. The function is also switched off when the descent angle decreases to 8%. For the hill descent assist function to work, sufficient traction of the wheels with the road is required. On icy or slippery slopes, this feature may not be able to perform its task. A green indicator in the instrument cluster is used to indicate that the function is operating. A steady glow indicates that the function is ready to operate, and flashing indicates that the function has been activated. The function is activated automatically when the following conditions are met:
- the "Offroad" mode is on and the "indicator is on
" - on models with manual transmission: engine running, 1-3 gear engaged, or reverse gear, or neutral gear;
- on models with DSG: the engine is running, the selector lever is not in the "P" position;
- speed less than 30 km/h;
- the slope gradient is not less than 10% (when crossing rapids it can decrease to 8%;
- the brake and gas pedals are not pressed. During active intervention, the brake lights do not light. In this case, you should also not turn off the "Offroad" mode.
