Checking the condition of the timing belt (Skoda Felicia)

1. Remove the upper timing belt cover (see Chapter Engine repair).

2. Carefully inspect the belt for cracks (pay special attention to the condition of the tooth bases). Check for signs of wear and tear and assess the condition of the belt edges.

3. To inspect the belt along its entire length, turn the crankshaft in the normal direction using the bolt of its pulley.

4. If any defects are detected, the belt must be replaced (see Chapter Engine repair). Remember that if the timing belt slips or breaks while the engine is running, it can lead to very serious consequences, such as damage to the internal components of the cylinder head and piston crowns.

5. A belt contaminated with oil or other liquid must also be replaced. In this case, the source of the leak must first be identified and its cause eliminated.

6. Finally, reinstall the upper belt cover (see Chapter Engine repair).
