Note: If the bellows are damaged, moisture and dirt will penetrate into the steering gear. There should be a film of grease on the rack teeth that can be felt. If there is no grease, the steering gear must be replaced. The steering gear is also replaced if the rack is corroded, damaged or worn.
Set the wheels to the Straight ahead position. Remove the wheel. Clean the steering gear in the corrugated boot areas. In doing so, prevent dirt from getting inside the steering gear through a damaged corrugated boot. Mark the position of the nut "3" on the rod. Holding the steering rod end "2" from turning, loosen the lock nut "3". Remove the spring clamp "1" from the corrugated boot with clamp pliers "V.A.G 1275" and move it to the steering rod. Remove the clamp from the steering rack side and pull the bellows off the steering gear housing. Unscrew the steering rod from the steering tip. Remove the spring clamp and bellows boot from the steering rod.
Note: If there are visible signs of corrosion, damage, wear or contamination of the toothed rack, the steering gear is replaced as an assembly. If there is no visible film of grease on the toothed rack, the steering gear is also replaced as an assembly.

Caution! The toothed rack does not need to be lubricated.
Set the wheels to the straight-ahead position. Put the clamp, boot and spring clamp on the steering rod. Screw the rod into the end up to the previously applied mark. Holding the end of the steering rod "2" from turning, tighten the lock nut "3" with a torque wrench. Lubricate the contact point of the corrugated boot and the steering rod with plastic grease "G 052 168 A1". Slide the corrugated boot "2" along the steering rod "1" as shown in the figure.
Install spring clamp "1" on the corrugated cover using pliers, e.g. "V.A.G 1275". Lubricate the contact area of the bellows and the steering gear housing with plastic grease "G 052 168 A1". Put the bellows onto the steering gear housing as far as it will go. Use steering gear pliers, "VAS 6199" to crimp the new clamp as shown in the figure. Install in the reverse order. After installation, check the wheel alignment angles. Perform basic installation of the steering angle sensor "G85". Perform basic installation of the steering control.
