When the wheels are pointing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel from unexpected movement with the "arrow" tape.
Unscrew nut "1" and pull the floor covering in the "direction of the arrow".
Loosen bolt "1" and remove cardan joint "2" from the steering gear shaft. Disconnect the battery. Remove the front wheels. Remove the noise-insulating casing.
On vehicles with automatic headlight range control, disconnect the front left ground clearance sensor connector "G78".
Disconnect the exhaust system bracket "arrows" from the subframe.
On both sides, disconnect the struts "3" from the stabilizer "2".
Disconnect the lower support of the power unit from the gearbox. To do this, unscrew the bolts "1".
Unscrew the nuts of the ball joints "arrows". Unscrew the nuts on both steering rod ends by several turns, but do not remove them.
Note: To protect the threads, leave the nut screwed onto the top few turns of the steering tip pin thread.
Using the ball joint puller "3287A", press out the ball joint/steering tip pin from the steering knuckle. Unscrew the ball joint/steering tip nut.
Disconnect connector "2" of the oil level and temperature sensor "G266" "1" if available.
Release the wiring harness "3" "1" and disconnect the clamp "2" from the steering rack.
Remove bolts "1" of the steering gear.
Place the engine and transmission jack "VAG 1383A" under the subframe. Place a wooden block "1" between the jack "VAG 1383A" and the subframe. Fix the subframe and lower it no more than 10 cm.
Unscrew the "arrow" bolts and remove the heat shield "1".
Note: The design of the shield depends on the vehicle configuration.
Disconnect connectors "1" and "2".
Loosen the "arrow" holder of the wires on the steering gear. Disconnect the wiring harness "1" from the steering rack "2".
Remove the "arrow" expansion rivet. Lower the subframe. Carefully pry and remove the steering gear from the subframe. Remove the steering rack by sliding it back.
Installation
Installation in reverse order.
Note: Before installing the steering gear, apply a lubricant, such as liquid soap, to the seal of the hole for the steering gear shaft. When installing, make sure not to damage or twist the steering gear boot.
Take a test drive. Check the steering wheel position during the test drive.
Note: If the steering wheel is turned after a test drive in a straight-ahead direction, the wheel alignment must be adjusted.
