Checking the condition of suspension and steering components (Skoda Yeti 5L)

Note: Steering and suspension components should be inspected regularly as wear can cause excessive and dangerous tire wear, poor ride and handling, and increased fuel consumption. For more detailed information on suspension and steering components, please refer to Chapter 10.

Checking suspension and steering components

1. Inspect the steering system components for damage or deformation. Note the damaged anthers.

2. Clean the steering knuckle from dirt in the area of the suspension ball joint. Have an assistant grab the bottom edge of the wheel and rock it while you watch the movement of the ball joint that connects the steering knuckle to the suspension arm. Inspect the ball joint dust boots (see illustration) for breaks. If any play is detected (radial or axial) or torn anthers, the ball joint and its anther should be replaced.



3. Inspect the bearings (rubber support bushings) front suspension (see illustration). There should be no play in them, and the vulcanized rubber support should be free of cracks or pores.

4. Grasp each front wheel at the front and rear edges and try to turn it with the front edge inward and the rear edge outward to check for play in the steering gear. If play is detected, check for looseness in the steering gear and tie rod end joints. Tighten any loose fasteners. The cause of loose steering rods may be worn joints: first check that the nuts are securely tightened. Check the condition of the steering gear boots and tie rod end joints (see illustration). If the tip boots are torn or twisted, replace them along with the tips.

5. Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.



6. Turn the steering wheel from side to side, watching the front wheels. The steering wheel with the engine running may have a play of no more than 30 mm along the outer radius of the steering wheel. There should be no play in the steering column when attempting to move the steering wheel up/down or left/right.

7. If there is more play in the steering wheel, check the steering rods and steering gear.
