Section 2, Part A describes repairs that can be performed without removing the engine from the vehicle. If the engine has been removed for overhaul, ignore the additional information that precedes each step.
Theoretically, pistons and connecting rods can be removed directly in the engine compartment (after removing the cylinder head and sump). However, it is not recommended to do this, since such procedures are much easier to perform on a removed engine; for this reason, all such tasks are classified as overhaul procedures, and along with the procedures for removing the engine/transmission assembly from the vehicle and overhauling the engine, are described in Part B of Section 2.
