The disc brake mechanism consists of the following components:
  • Disc brake pads: apply the mechanical output force from the hydraulic brake calipers to the friction surfaces of the brake rotors.
  • Disc brakes use mechanical output force applied from the disc brake pads to the friction surfaces to reduce the rotational speed of the wheel and tire assembly.
  • Disc brake pad retainers: Securely clamp the disc brake pads in the correct position relative to the hydraulic brake calipers. Allows the brake pads to slide and move when mechanical output force is applied.
  • Disc Brake Caliper Mounting Components: Provide mounting for the hydraulic brake caliper and securely hold the caliper in the proper position relative to the caliper bracket. Allows the brake caliper to slide and move toward the brake pads when mechanical output force is applied.
  • Mechanical output force is applied from the hydraulic brake caliper pistons to the inner brake pads. As the pistons push the inner brake pads outward, the caliper housings move the outer brake pads inward. This ensures uniform distribution of the output force. Brake pads apply output force to friction surfaces on both sides of the brake discs, which slows down the rotation of the wheel and tire assembly. Proper functioning of the brake pad and brake caliper hardware is important for even distribution of braking force.
