Removal
1. Set the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
For models with mechanical ignition key
2. Remove the key from the ignition switch to lock the steering column.
For models with electronic ignition key
3. Turn off the ignition and open the front door glass so that the steering column is locked.
4. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
Continued for all car models
5. Remove the instrument panel trim panel from the driver's side (for more details, see the corresponding section in the chapter "Body").
6. Fold the floor covering aside.
7. Unscrew the connecting bolt (1) from the universal joint (2), then disconnect the joint from the steering rack pinion shaft by pulling it in the direction of the arrow, as shown in the figure below.
Attention:
It is prohibited to perform the following operations with the steering column shaft disconnected from the steering gear pinion shaft:
- Connecting the battery.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Turn the steering gear.
- Turn the steering column.
8. Loosen the wheel mounting bolts.
9. Raise the car on a lift. Check and ensure that the vehicle is securely fixed to the lift supports.
10. Remove the front wheels as an assembly.
11. Remove the lower insulation covering of the engine compartment.
12. Remove the insulation covering from the rear of the subframe assembly.
13. If installed, remove the center underbody insulation lining.
14. Remove the mounting bolts and detach the front section exhaust pipe mounting bracket as shown in the figure below.
15. Unscrew the mounting bolts (1) of the longitudinal support of the power unit, shown in the figure below.
16. Loosen the mounting nut (1) of the anti-roll bar (3), as shown in the figure below.
17. Disconnect the strut (3) from the anti-roll bar (2) on the left and right sides of the vehicle.
18. Unscrew the mounting nuts (arrows) of the lower arm of the front suspension from the ball joint of the steering knuckle.
19. Disconnect the front suspension arm from the front suspension ball joint as shown in the figure below.
20. Loosen the nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Do not completely remove the nut from the hinge pin.
Caution: To prevent damage to the threaded portion of the tie rod end pivot pin, leave the tie rod end nut tightened two to three turns.
21. Using a suitable puller, disconnect the tie rod end joint from the steering knuckle as shown in the figure below. Perform this operation on both sides of the vehicle.
Cars with a height sensor
22.Disconnect the wiring harness connector (1) shown in the figure below from the left or right side of the vehicle as shown in the figure below.
For all models
23. Disconnect the wiring harness connector (1) from the engine oil level and temperature sensor as shown in the figure below.
24. If installed, disconnect the wiring harness connector (2) from the auxiliary circulation pump. To do this, open the latch (3) by pressing in the direction of the arrow, then disconnect the connector.
25. Release the wiring harness (3) from the clips (1) and (2) on the subframe and steering gear, as shown in the figure below.
26. Place a special hydraulic jack with a support platform (1) under the front suspension subframe, as shown in the figure below.
27. Fix the position of the subframe on the platform of the hydraulic jack and lower it together with the jack by approximately 10 mm.
28. Unscrew the mounting bolts (arrows) and remove the heat-insulating covering (1) from the steering gear, as shown in the figure below.
Note: Depending on the engine, the shape of the thermal insulation coating may differ from that shown in the figure below.
29. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors (1) and (2) from the steering rack as shown in the figure below.
30. Release the wiring harness (1) from the retainer on the steering gear (2) as shown in the figure below.
31. Remove the retainer shown in the figure below (arrow).
32. Lower the subframe assembly using a hydraulic jack.
33. Secure the front suspension subframe to the support platform of the hydraulic jack.
34. Fix the position of the steering rack on the car body.
35. Lower the jack together with the subframe assembly.
Installation
1. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
