Note: Hydraulic compensators cannot be repaired. Irregular tapping of the valves when starting the engine is not a malfunction.
Start the engine and let it run until the radiator fan comes on. Increase the speed to about 2500 rpm for 2 minutes, and test drive if necessary.
Note: If random valve noises disappear but always reappear during short trips, the oil check valve must be replaced.
If the hydraulic compensators do not stop making noise, determine the faulty compensator as follows. Remove the cylinder head cover. Rotate the crankshaft by the toothed belt pulley mounting bolt until the cam of the hydraulic compensator being checked is positioned upward. To measure the gap between the cam and the roller lever, press the roller lever down "arrow". If a 0.20 mm feeler gauge fits between the cam and the roller lever, replace the hydraulic compensator.

Install the valve cover.
