Valve knocking when starting the engine is not a sign of a faulty hydraulic valve lifter.

1. Start the engine and let it idle until the radiator fan comes on.

2. Increase the engine speed to approximately 2500 rpm and maintain it for 2 minutes. If you hear valve tapping during this time, one or more hydraulic lifters are faulty.

3. Remove the cylinder head cover and turn the crankshaft so that the valves of the fourth cylinder are open.

4. Check if there are any gaps between the rocker arms and the valves of the first cylinder. The presence of gaps indicates that the hydraulic tappets are faulty and therefore need to be replaced.

5. If there are no gaps, press lightly with a wooden or plastic wedge 5 (see subsection 2.12.5) on the adjusting screws 2. If you feel that the hydraulic tappet is compressed, it is faulty and needs to be replaced. Check the remaining hydraulic tappets in the same way by turning the engine crankshaft in accordance with the table. Position of the crankshaft when adjusting the initial position of the hydraulic tappets.

Caution! After installing new hydraulic lifters, wait at least 30 minutes before starting the engine, otherwise the pistons may hit the valves.
