Note: The catalytic converter is removed complete with downpipe. All cable ties must be put back into place during installation.
Remove connector -2- for lambda probe in front of catalytic converter -G39- from bracket, unplug electrical wiring and move clear. Pos. -1- can be ignored.
Unscrew screw -2- and remove retaining clip. Unscrew nuts -1 and 3-.
Note: For clarity, the procedure is shown with the engine removed. Pos. -4- can be ignored.
Note: If the downpipe is removed again, observe the following. Do not kink the bellows by more than CU - risk of damage. Do not damage the bellows.
For vehicles with front wheel drive
Loosen screws -1- and remove heat shield for propshaft on right side, if present.
All
Remove the plastic cover of the floor tunnel. Unscrew the bolts (20 Nm) -arrows- and remove the front cross member of the tunnel.
For vehicles with all-wheel drive
Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove heat shield for right drive shaft.
Loosen the screws - see arrows- and remove heat shield -1-. Mark position of propshaft coupling and bevel gear flange relative to each other.
Unscrew propshaft from bevel gear -arrows- while holding triangular flange with a spudger.
Slightly move the power unit forward in the direction of travel and disconnect the propshaft from the bevel gear.
Carefully! Risk of damage to O-ring -arrow- of propshaft flange. Press propeller shaft horizontally as far forward and to the left as possible (cool side of the car). If the sealing ring is damaged, the cardan shaft must be replaced.
All
Remove screws -arrows-. Remove the connector from the bracket, release the electrical wiring to the lambda probe from the mounts.
Release clutch -arrow- and push back. Remove the converter assembly with the exhaust pipe towards the rear.
Insert a screwdriver -2- into the groove -arrow- of the turbocharger and pry out the O-ring -1-. Replace O-ring -1-.
Installation
Installation in reverse order.
Note: If the downpipe is removed again, take the following into account: Do not damage the bellows. Replace seals and self-locking nuts. Apply high temperature paste to the threads.
Connect the catalytic converter to the turbocharger without tightening the clamp. Tighten nuts and clamp. Correct the position of the elements of the exhaust system (install stress-free).
