Removal



1. Unscrew the fuel tank filler cap.

2. Cover the fuel tank filler neck opening with a piece of clean foam plastic to prevent any contaminants from getting in.

3. Remove the rear seat cushion and assembly (for more details, see the corresponding section in the chapter Body).

4. Remove the fuel pump cover under the carpet.

5. Disconnect the five-pin fuel pump wiring harness connector.

6. If necessary, empty the fuel tank (for more details, see the relevant section in this chapter).

7. Remove the rear suspension components (for more details, see the relevant section in the chapter Chassis).

8. Remove the right rear wheel arch liner (for more details, see the corresponding section in the chapter Body).

9. Remove the rear section of the exhaust pipe (for more details, see the relevant section in the chapter Intake and exhaust system).

10. Remove the fuel tank filler neck screws (arrows) shown in the figure below.

11. Disconnect the fuel supply line (black) (1) and the fuel return line (blue) (2) from the fuel tank as shown in the figure below. To do this, press the release buttons.



12. Remove the support tape passing through the heat shield.

14. Secure the fuel tank using a special tool for removing and installing the engine and gearbox "VAG 1383 A".

Installation



1. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of actions. In this case, it is necessary to observe the following instructions:

Check both ground wire entries for signs of corrosion and remove any signs of corrosion that may be present.

Check the assembly position of the ground wire (1) shown in the figure below. The wiring harness connector (1) must be firmly installed on the sheet metal ring (2).



The contact tongue (4) must be suspended in the fuel tank (3) and secured with the spacer sleeve (5), as shown in the figure below.

The fuel lines should be laid so that they do not bend excessively.

Do not confuse the fuel supply and return lines (the fuel return line is blue, the fuel supply line is black).

Make sure that all connections are tight and secure.

Check the strength of the fastening of the supply and return fuel lines to the fuel tank.

Before starting the engine, it is necessary to remove air from the fuel system.

Turn the ignition on and off only after the fuel pump stops working. This step should be repeated at least 5 times.

Note.
  • Make sure that the fuel tank insulation lining (1) does not rest against the underbody tunnel insulation lining (2) after installing the fuel tank.
