When the key is removed from the ignition switch, the steering column lock is engaged.
When the key is in the ignition switch in position (1, see illustration 12.4), the steering column lock is not released. The ignition is off, all electrical consumers are off. The key can be removed from the lock. To remove the key from the ignition on models with DSG, the selector lever must be in position "R". If necessary, press and release the release button on the selector lever. If, with the engine off, the key remains in the ignition for a long time, and the selector lever is not in the "R". the battery is being discharged.
12.4 Ignition switch positions
When the key is turned to the first position (2 in illustration 12.4) the ignition is turned on. On diesel models, the glow plugs come on and you should wait for them to turn off before starting the engine. If the steering wheel was turned when the key was removed from the lock, when the key was turned from the position "1" into position "2" turn the steering wheel slightly from side to side to unlock the steering column.
When the key is turned all the way (3 in illustration 12.4) the starter is turned on, the engine starts. Powerful consumers of electricity are switched off during the operation of the starter. Release the key immediately after starting the engine, the key will return to the "2". Do not operate the starter for more than 15 seconds. If the engine cannot be started, return the key to the "1" and try again after waiting for about a minute. A detailed description of the procedure for starting and shutting down the engine is given in Section 20.
To turn off the engine, turn the key to position "1". Switch off the engine only when the vehicle is stationary. Turning off the engine while driving makes it difficult to stop the vehicle, and can result in loss of vehicle control and serious injury. When the engine is off, the auxiliary brake and steering systems do not work. SRS system and other security systems. Never turn the key to the position "1" with a moving car.
