Preparing for a car trip
Before getting into the car, make sure that its windows, mirrors and lights are clean. Check the condition of the wheels, look under the car and make sure there are no leaks of working fluids.
Check engine fluid levels according to the maintenance schedule (engine oil, coolant and brake fluids), and also the level of windshield washer fluid (see Chapter 1). Once in the vehicle, perform the following operations:
- close and lock all doors;
- adjust the position of the seat, steering column and rear view mirrors (see Section 9);
- make sure that the external lighting devices are working properly;
- check the operation of control and measuring instruments;
- when turning on the ignition, check the serviceability of the control lamps located in the instrument cluster;
- fasten your seat belt and remind your passengers to do the same;
- release the parking brake and make sure that the corresponding K/L goes out.
Turning on the ignition, starting the engine and turning off the ignition
Note: A description of how to use the "KESSY" system to start the engine is given in the subsection below.
The description of the positions of the key in the ignition switch is given in Section 12.
First, make sure the parking brake is on and all auxiliary systems are off. Press the brake pedal and do not release it until the engine starts. On models with a manual transmission, you should also hold down the clutch pedal. If you do not press the clutch pedal, a corresponding reminder may appear on the instrument cluster display.
Turn on the ignition. Then, on diesel models, wait until the pre-heating indicator goes out. At low outside temperatures, this may take several seconds.
On models with DSG, the engine will not start unless the selector lever is in the "N" or "P" position, and at temperatures below -10°C, starting is only possible in the "P" position.
To turn on the starter, turn the ignition key all the way away from you. Do not press the gas pedal while the starter is running. As soon as the engine starts, release the key - it will return to the ignition on position.
If the engine fails to start, turn off the ignition and try again after 30 seconds. After three unsuccessful attempts to start (the engine received too much fuel) wait at least 10 seconds and then try again by slowly depressing the accelerator pedal all the way down and holding it there. If you have difficulty starting the engine at temperatures below -25°C, depress the accelerator pedal by 1/4:1/2 of its stroke to make starting easier.
Caution: In any case, the starter operation time should not exceed 10 seconds. Starting the engine after the fuel tank is completely empty may take up to a minute.
Let the engine idle for a long time before driving (at least 30 seconds), after which the engine should be warmed up while moving (at moderate speeds). Until the engine has warmed up, avoid running it at high speeds and under heavy load, especially in cold weather.
After a long period of high load on the engine, do not turn it off immediately, let it run at idle speed for a few minutes first to avoid a sharp temperature difference in different areas of the engine. If you turn off the engine at other than idle speed, the turbocharger will continue to operate without engine oil pressure, which will lead to premature wear of the turbocharger bearing.
To turn off the engine, stop the car completely, depress the brake pedal, set the parking brake, and move the selector lever to the "P" position (only on models with DSG), and release the brake pedal. Then turn the ignition key to position "0". On models with manual transmission, after turning off the engine, engage 1st or reverse gear.
Button "Engine start/stop"
If the "KESSY" system is present, there is a button in place of the ignition switch "Engine Start/stop". replacing it.
Electronic steering column lock
The steering column lock is released within 2 seconds after opening and then closing the driver's door, provided that the "KESSY" system has detected a suitable key inside the car. If the first attempt to release the lock is unsuccessful (for example, if the wheels hit the curb), the system makes a second attempt. If the lock still cannot be released automatically, the display shows the message "Turn the steering wheel!", and within 2 seconds, 3 more attempts are made to release the lock. The yellow steering wheel indicator light is on. If the lock still cannot be released, the display shows the message "Steering column not unlocked" for 10 seconds - you should remove the obstacle and try again.
If the steering column is locked, after pressing the button "Engine start/ stop" the lock is removed, power consumers are activated and the ignition is turned on.
The steering column lock is activated after the car is locked, and also if, after the car is stopped, the ignition is turned off and the driver's door is opened. If the ignition is turned off with the driver's door open, the steering column is not locked; in this case, to lock it, you should close and open the driver's door, or lock the car using the KESSY system touch panel on the outside door handle. If, after locking the steering column, you do not get back into the car with the appropriate key, but still need to remove the lock, press the button "Engine start/ stop", - simultaneously, power consumers are activated and the ignition is turned on.
The electronic steering lock has an engine protection function that slows down the locking and unlocking of the steering column when the button is pressed multiple times "Engine start/stop" within a short time.
Turn on ignition/stop engine
To start the engine, when a suitable key is detected inside the vehicle and the steering column is unlocked, briefly press the button "Engine start/stop". If the ignition is on and the driver's door is open, the message "Turn off ignition!" appears on the instrument cluster display.
To turn off the ignition at a speed of no more than 2 km/h, briefly press the button "Engine start/stop". On models with manual transmission, when the ignition is switched off, the clutch pedal must not be pressed, otherwise the system will try to restart the engine. On models with DSG, the selector lever must be in position P or N, and the brake pedal must be released.
In an emergency, the ignition can be switched off even at a speed of more than 2 km/h ("emergency ignition off"). To do this, hold down the button "Engine start/stop" pressed for more than 1 s or press it twice within 1 s.
Starting the engine
To start the engine, the vehicle must have a suitable key, the steering column must be unlocked and the ignition must be on. When starting the engine on models with a manual transmission, hold down the clutch pedal, and on models with a DSG, set the selector to position "P" or "N" and hold the brake pedal down until the engine starts. The need to press the brake pedal is reminded by a corresponding message on the instrument cluster display. On diesel models, the button must also be held down while the glow plugs are operating - the engine will start when the K/L pre-glow light goes out. Alternatively, on diesel models, the engine can be started by pressing the button "Engine start/stop" (the ignition will turn on and the pre-glow lamp will light up), wait until the preheating system turns off. press the button again "Engine start/stop" and hold it down until the engine starts. In an emergency, you can press the button again without waiting for the preheating system to turn off.
If the steering column is locked when the engine is started, it can be unlocked by pressing a button "Engine start/stop". - power consumers will turn on, the ignition will turn on and the engine will start
If the vehicle key cannot be identified, the message "Key not found" or "No key" appears on the instrument cluster display. In this case, an emergency engine start is required: press the button "Engine start/stop" and then press the key to it (side with indicator and folding button), or click the button "Engine start/stop" directly with the key.
