Fig. 10.13. Steering column with ignition lock/switch mounting bracket
1. Steering column tube; 2. Ignition lock/lock mounting bracket; 3. Ignition interlock/lock; 4. Shear bolt; 5. Shear bolt.
Note: The steering column lock/ignition switch is secured with shear bolts; before you begin work, make sure you have new bolts.
Removal
1. Check that the steering gear is unlocked, then disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Loosen the mounting screw and remove the lower steering column cover, releasing it from the upper cover. Loosen the two mounting screws and remove the upper cover.
3. Before disconnecting the wiring from the multi-function switches, carefully mark the location of the connectors (stick labels on switches and connectors).
4. Unscrew the fastening nut and self-tapping screw, remove (if any) shield from the partition at the lower end of the steering column.

5. Unscrew the two upper mounting bolts (and remove the clamp and rubber bushings), then remove the lower mounting bolts and lower the steering column until the steering wheel rests against the driver's seat.
6. Disconnect the wiring from the ignition switch. The ignition switch can now be separated (if required) from the steering column lock by unscrewing two countersunk head screws; first mark the location of the switch relative to the lock (photo).

7. Mark the shear bolts with a punch, then drill out their heads (see photo). New bolts will be required for installation.

8. Remove the steering column lock/ignition switch. Then remove the remaining shear bolts using a suitable tool. If required, the lock/switch can be separated from the mounting bracket by removing the shear bolt (as described above); a new bolt will be required during assembly.
Installation
9. Install in the reverse order of removal, paying attention to the following.
- a) Place the assembly on the steering column, then connect the wiring to the ignition switch. Lightly tighten the shear bolts, and check that the steering column lock and ignition switch work normally.
- b) Mark the steering column on the mounting brackets and tighten the bolts to the specified tightening torque Specifications (Chapter 14).
- c) Jack up the front of the vehicle and check the steering operation by rotating the steering wheel from one extreme position to the other, then check the operation of the steering column lock and ignition switch again, then tighten the shear bolts evenly until their heads break off.
- d) Connect the switch wiring (multifunctional), then install the ignition switch trim and the upper and lower steering column covers.
