Removal



1. Make sure the steering gear is unlocked, then disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. Remove the multi-function switches (Section 12) or disconnect their wiring. Mark the connection points using self-adhesive labels. Do not disturb the position of the turn signal self-resetting tongue on the back of the steering column (photo).

9. Install in the reverse order of removal, paying attention to the following.
  • a) Loosely assemble the steering column mounts and the lower universal joint. Make sure that the joint is positioned on the steering gear pinion shaft so that the hole for the tie bolt is precisely aligned with the groove in the pinion shaft. Install the tie bolt and tighten it to the specified tightening torque Specifications.
  • b) Connect the wires to the ignition switch.
  • c) Make sure the steering column is positioned on the mountings without tension, then tighten the bolts to the specified tightening torque Specifications; install the shield where applicable.
  • d) Connect the multifunction switch wiring harness, then install the ignition switch trim and the upper and lower steering column covers (see photo).
  • e) When assembly is complete, jack up the front of the vehicle and check the correct operation of the steering mechanism by turning the steering wheel from one extreme position to the other.
