Removing
1. Make sure the steering gear is unlocked, then disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Turn off the fastening screw, and take the lower casing of a steering column. Unscrew the two fixing screws and remove the upper casing, then use a screwdriver to remove the ignition lock cover (photo).
3. Remove the multifunction switches (Section 12) or disconnect their electrical wiring. Mark the connections using self-adhesive labels. Do not disturb the position of the turn signal self-resetting tongue on the back of the steering column (photo).
4. Unscrew the mounting nut and self-tapping screw, then remove the shield from the bulkhead at the lower end of the steering column (see photo).
5. Loosen and remove the pinch bolt securing the universal joint at the base of the steering column to the steering gear shaft (see photo).
6. Remove the two top mounting bolts (and remove the clamp and rubber bushings), then unscrew the bottom mounting bolts (see photo), and lower the steering column until the steering wheel rests on the driver's seat.
7. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring.
8. Remove the steering column.
Installation
9. Install in the reverse order of removal paying attention to the following.
- A) Loosely assemble the steering column mounts and lower universal joint. Ensure that the pivot is positioned on the steering gear shaft so that the hole for the pinion bolt is exactly aligned with the groove in the gear shaft. Install the tie bolt and tighten it with a tightening torque specified specifications.
- b) Connect the wires to the ignition switch.
- c) Make sure that the steering column is placed on the fasteners without tension, then tighten the bolts with the tightening torque specified specifications; install shield where applicable.
- d) Connect the multifunction switch wiring, then install the ignition switch trim and upper and lower steering column shrouds (see photo).
- e) When assembly is complete, jack up the front of the vehicle and test for proper steering by turning the steering wheel from one end to the other.
