General description
1. Although it is possible to remove the traction relay without removing the starter from the car, we still recommend removing the starter (Chapter 9).
Brushes
Removing
2. Remove the rear starter cover. loosening the small bolt (photo).
3. To remove the brush for inspection, pry out the spring with a small screwdriver, and loosen the screw securing the wire. then remove the brush from the guide (photo).
4. In most cases, brushes have wear limit marks in the form of grooves engraved on them; if these marks are no longer visible, the brushes are considered worn. If there are no marks, measure the height of the brush protruding from the brush holder. No values are specified by the manufacturer, but roughly the height should be at least 1 (1 mm (photo).
5. If the brushes are badly worn, they must be replaced as a matched set.
6. If the brushes are still serviceable. clean them with a cloth dampened with solvent. Make sure the brushes are evenly spring loaded and firmly pressed against the commutator rings. If there is any doubt about the condition of the brushes and springs, compare them with new components.
Installation
7. Install in the reverse order of removal.
Traction relay
Removing
8. Unscrew the nut of the lower terminal at the end of the traction relay, and carefully bend the conductive plate from the contact post (photo).
9. Unscrew the two bolts securing the traction relay to the bracket on the drive side.
10. Release the traction relay plunger from the starter drive lever, then remove the traction relay, noting the spring (photo).
Installation
11. Install in the reverse order of removal. Clean the pull relay, plunger, and starter/traction relay contact surfaces, and lubricate the plunger/starter actuating lever with multipurpose grease (Duckhams LB10).
