Removal
1. Working in the engine compartment, loosen the knurled retaining ring securing the speedometer drive cable to the drive mechanism located at the rear of the transmission. Disconnect the cable (see photo).
2. Hold the speedometer drive assembly to prevent it from falling into the transmission. Loosen and remove the drive mounting bolt and lock plate, then remove the assembly from the transmission (see photo).

3. Inspect the speedometer drive gear for cracked or chipped teeth and replace it if damaged. Inspect the speedometer drive O-ring for damage and replace it if necessary.

Installation
4. Lubricate the O-ring with oil, then place the speedometer drive mechanism assembly into the transmission. While holding it in the operating position, install the lock plate into the slots in the crankcase. Install the lock plate mounting bolt and tighten it to the specified torque Specifications.
5. Connect the speedometer drive cable to the drive mechanism and securely tighten its knurled retaining ring.
