Removing
1. Working in the engine compartment, unscrew the knurled retaining ring that secures the speedometer drive cable to the drive mechanism located at the rear of the transmission, disconnect the cable (see photo).
2. Support the speedometer drive assembly so that it does not fall into the transmission. Loosen and remove the drive mounting bolt and lock plate, then remove the assembly from the transmission (see photo).
3. Inspect the speedometer drive gear for cracked or chipped teeth and replace if damaged. Inspect the speedometer drive O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
Installation
4. Lubricate the O-ring with oil, then place the speedometer drive mechanism assembly into the transmission. While holding it in position, install the lock plate into the slots in the crankcase. Install the locking plate mounting bolt and tighten it with a tightening torque specified specifications.
5. Connect the speedometer drive cable to the drive mechanism and securely tighten its knurled retaining ring.
