Steering and suspension
1. Try to identify any unusual sensations that arise when driving a car. Assess the directional stability of the vehicle.
2. Pay attention to unusual noises and vibrations emitted by suspension and steering components while driving.
3. Assess the car's controllability - the steering wheel should rotate freely, without excessive slack or jerks. The suspension should not make any extraneous noises when turning and driving on uneven road surfaces.
Transmission line
1. Try to evaluate the efficiency of the engine output and the quality of rotation transmission by the components of the clutch, gearbox and drive shafts.
2. Pay attention to any unusual noises coming from the engine and transmission components.
3. Check the stability of the engine idle speed. Assess the stability of the speed during acceleration.
4. Make sure that the clutch operates smoothly and quietly. The pedal travel should not be excessive, and its pressing should not lead to the occurrence of extraneous sounds.
5. Make sure that all gears engage easily and quietly - the control lever should move freely, without jerking or jamming.
6. Listen for sounds coming from the front of the car when driving slowly in a circle with the steering wheel turned all the way. The check should be done for both directions of wheel rotation. The presence of a metallic grinding sound will indicate wear of the constant velocity joints (CV joints) of the drive shafts.
Checking the correct operation and efficiency of the brakes
1. Make sure that the vehicle maintains directional stability during braking. Sharp braking should not cause premature wheel locking.
2. Make sure that there is no vibration in the steering wheel when the vehicle is braking.
3. Check the proper functioning of the parking brake - the car should be securely held on the slope even with moderate tension on the lever.
4. Check the brake booster for proper operation. To release the vacuum, press the foot brake pedal four or five times with the engine off. Keeping the pedal pressed, start the engine - the pedal should noticeably drop down. Let the engine run for a couple of minutes, then turn it off. Now when you press the pedal, you should hear a slight hissing sound from the brake booster servo. After pressing the pedal several times, the hissing should stop and the pedal stroke should become noticeably firmer.
