Front wheel hub assembly
1 - Swivel fist; 2 - Bearing; 3 - Spring ring; 4 - Hub; 5 - Nut; 6 - Ball joint; 7 - Brake disc
Note. The double row roller wheel bearing is sealed. Packing the assembly with grease and setting the preload are made at the vehicle manufacturer. The bearing is designed for the entire life of the vehicle and does not require any additional maintenance. Try not to overtighten the hub nut - use a torque wrench.
To perform the wheel bearing disassembly and assembly procedures, a suitable press will be required, in the absence of which a large bench vise with a set of cylindrical arbors will fit (as such, socket heads of suitable size are perfect). The inner races of the bearing are preloaded on the hub. If, when dismantling the bearing, the cage remains on the hub, a special puller with blade-type grippers is required to remove it.
1. Remove the hub assembly from the vehicle (see Section Removal and installation of hub assemblies of forward wheels).
2. Place the assembly firmly on a couple of wooden blocks, or clamp it in a vise with soft jaws. Using a cylindrical mandrel resting only on the inner edge of the hub flange, squeeze the latter out of the bearing. If the outer part of the inner race of the bearing remains on the hub, use a puller.
3. Remove the circlip from the outer end of the hub assembly.
4. Support the outer side of the hub assembly firmly. Using a cylindrical mandrel resting only on the inner race of the bearing, squeeze the assembly of the latter out of the hub.
5. Thoroughly clean the hub assembly from dirt and traces of grease. Use sandpaper to remove any burrs or burrs that might interfere with component assembly. Check components for cracks and other signs of wear. Replace defective parts.
6. Lightly lubricate the bearing outer race and hub flange trunnion with Optimol VP317 oil to facilitate assembly of the components.
7. Support the hub firmly and insert the bearing into it. Using a cylindrical mandrel that rests only on the outer race of the bearing, press the latter all the way into the socket in the hub. Make sure the bearing seat is square.
8. Having planted the bearing in a nave, fix it with a lock ring. Make sure the ring is seated correctly in its groove.
9. Firmly support the outer side of the flange of the hub assembly. Slide the inner race of the bearing onto the end of the flange. Using a cylindrical mandrel, resting only on the inner race, seat the bearing against the stop in the shoulders of the assembly. Check free rotation of flange, remove excess oil/grease.
10. Install the hub assembly on the car (see Section Removal and installation of hub assemblies of forward wheels).
