Note. Before performing the following procedures, read the warnings in Section Airbag - general information, precautions and deactivation of the system.
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery (see warning. Given in Section General information and precautions) and wait for at least one minute.
Driver airbag
Removing
1. Remove the two screws securing the airbag assembly from the back of the steering wheel (for best access, turn the steering wheel accordingly).
2. Return the steering wheel to a straight position and carefully remove the airbag assembly from its hub. Disconnect the wiring from the assembly. Take care not to hit or shake the assembly, or turn it upside down.
Installation
1. Track reliability of fastening of an electric socket. When landing the assembly in a regular place, try not to pinch the wires.
2. Screw in the mounting screws and tighten them to the required torque.
3. Make sure no one is in the car, then connect the battery. Through the open driver's door, turn on the ignition and make sure that the control lamp is working properly.
Passenger airbag
Removing
1. Carefully release the latches and remove the cushion assembly access cover from the passenger side of the instrument panel.
2. Give nuts of fastening of assembly of an airbag and remove washers. Carefully remove the assembly from its seat and disconnect the electrical wiring from it.
3. To remove the assembly support bracket, remove the screws securing the trim panel bracket (through the opening of the cover panel), then release the panel base from the clips and remove the section from the instrument panel. Give fixing nuts, throw off washers and remove a basic arm from a bulkhead of an impellent compartment.
Installation
1. If removed, install the support bracket on the bulkhead of the engine compartment and tighten the nuts of its fastening with the required force. Snap the trim panel into place and securely tighten the screws securing it.
2. Connect the electrical wiring, making sure that the connector is securely fixed and put the pillow assembly in its regular place - try not to pinch the wires. Screw on the fixing nuts and tighten them to the required torque. Install the airbag assembly access cover to the instrument panel.
3. Make sure no one is in the car, then connect the battery. Through the open driver's door, turn on the ignition and make sure that the control lamp is working properly.
Airbag control unit
Removing
1. Remove the center console (see Section Removal and installation of the center console).
2. Remove the radio (see Section Removal and installation of the car radio), then fold back the locking tabs and remove the slide assembly from its seat in the instrument panel. Disconnect the roller bearing antenna and power wiring from the skid.
3. Remove the sleeve connecting the base of the heater casing to the rear footwell air duct.
4. Give fixing nuts and remove the foot rest installed near the clutch pedal.
5. On right-hand drive models, in the passenger footwell, release the latch and remove the decorative cover from the left bracket of the pedal assembly support.
Note. To release the latch, remove the center pin from the latch.
6. On all models, fold back the carpet to provide access to the airbag control unit located under the front end of the foot air duct.
7. Give fixing nuts, throw off washers and remove the control unit from the support.
8. Release the latch, disconnect the electrical wiring and remove the control unit from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Connect the electrical wiring and secure the connector lock firmly. Install the control box on your supports (the arrow on the upper plane of the block must point forward along the car). Screw on the fixing nuts and tighten them to the required torque.
2. Replace the air sleeve making sure it is properly engaged with the mating components.
3. Peel back the carpet and replace the footrest by firmly tightening its retaining nuts.
4. On right-hand drive models, install the decorative cover on the left pedal assembly bracket and fasten it securely with the retainer.
5. On all models, install the center console (see Section Removal and installation of the center console).
6. Connect the electrical wiring and antenna cable to the sled of the radio. Fill the sled into the instrument panel, making sure that it is securely fixed with locking tabs. Install the radio in place.
7. Make sure no one is in the car, then connect the battery. Through the open driver's door, turn on the ignition and make sure that the control lamp is working properly.
Contact block for airbag system
Removing
1. Remove the driver's airbag assembly, then remove the steering wheel.
2. Mark the position of the contact block in relation to the steering wheel, then remove the fixing screws and separate the components.
Attention! Do not rotate the contact block removed from the vehicle!
Installation
1. Install the contact block on the steering wheel of the car in accordance with the landing marks applied during the dismantling process. Screw in and firmly tighten the fixing screws. When installing a new unit, cut and remove the mounting collar.
2. Replace the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation of a steering wheel), then install the driver's airbag assembly.
Front seat side airbag assemblies
The procedures for removing and installing the side airbag assemblies should be entrusted to car service specialists, due to the high risk of damage to the seat upholstery.
