The airbag system consists of working units (actual pillow with a gas generator), control unit (with built-in directional overload sensor) and a warning lamp built into the instrument panel. The operation of the front airbags occurs only in the event of a frontal impact, causing overloads with a frontal force not lower than the value stored in the memory of the control unit. The airbags inflate in thousandths of a second, guaranteeing maximum protection for the driver and front passenger.
On models equipped with side airbags, the latter are deployed in severe side impacts. The minimum overload value is also stored in the memory of the control unit. The presence of side airbags further increases the safety level of the car.
Each time the ignition is switched on, the control unit performs a short diagnosis of the state of the system components. The duration of the check is usually about four seconds and during this time the corresponding control lamp is lit on the instrument panel. At the end of the self-diagnosis cycle, if no violations in the system are detected, the control lamp should turn off. Otherwise (those. if the lamp does not turn on or does not go out after 4 seconds), as well as when the lamp is turned on while driving, there is a malfunction in the system and the car should be driven to a service station as soon as possible for a complete diagnosis and troubleshooting (first make sure that the control lamp just did not burn out).
Note. If the warning lamp continues to flash for another 12 seconds after 4 seconds, the passenger seat side airbag is deactivated. To bring the pillow into working condition, special electronic equipment is required, which can only be found at specialized service stations.
Attention! Any maintenance work on the airbag system components must not be started until at least one minute after disconnecting the negative cable from the battery. Upon completion of work, before connecting the battery, make sure that no one is in the cabin, then turn on the ignition through the open driver's door.
Do not allow airbags to heat up above 100°C. cushions removed from the vehicle should be stored away from heat sources.
Do not allow any solvents to come into contact with airbag components. Cleaning of open surfaces is only allowed with a slightly moistened cloth.
Please note that airbag control units are shock sensitive. If the unit is accidentally dropped and hits a hard surface, it should be replaced.
Before using arc welding on a vehicle, be sure to disconnect the wiring from the airbag control unit.
The passenger airbag must be deactivated when using special devices for transporting young children in the front seat (seek help from specialists).
