Examination
1. The operation of the reversing lights is controlled using a plunger-type sensor-switch screwed into the base of the gearbox housing from above. In the event of a malfunction of the lights, first check the condition of the corresponding fuse.
2. To check the sensor-switch, disconnect the electrical wiring from it (one or two sockets). Using an ohmmeter or test lamp, make sure there is continuity between the sensor-switch terminals with the reverse gear selected. If the test result is negative and there are no visible defects in the wiring of the corresponding circuit, the actual sensor-switch should be replaced.
Removing
Note. Reassembly will require a new sealing washer.
1. Firmly apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.
2. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the reversing lights sensor-switch - one or two connectors.
3. Prepare to collect spilled oil. Look for a suitable plug to plug the hole for installing the sensor-switch.
4. Thoroughly wipe the crankcase surface around the sensor switch. Unscrew the sensor and remove it together with the sealing washer. Plug the hole with the prepared cork.
Installation
1. Replace the sealing washer, then remove the plug and screw the sensor-switch into place in the transmission case. Tighten the sensor to the required torque.
2. Restore the original wiring connection, making sure the harness is securely fastened in all intermediate clamps.
3. Lower the vehicle to the ground and check the gear oil level in the gearbox. Make appropriate adjustments if necessary. Check the operation of the reverse lights.
