Review

Attention:

• Failure to pay attention to illuminated warning lights and related messages and warnings could result in serious injury and damage to your vehicle.
• The engine compartment of a car is a high-risk area. When working in the engine compartment, such as checking and adding fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns, accidents and fires. Please take note of the warning instructions.

Engine compartment

Note:

• The location of the indicator lamps depends on the engine version. The symbols shown in the following description can be found as indicator lights on the instrument cluster.
• Information on the instrument cluster is displayed in the form of red (priority 1 - danger) or yellow (priority 2 - warning) icons.

Fog lights

High beam headlights

Alarm lights up continuously when the high beam headlights are turned on or when the warning light is used via the headlights.

Low beam headlights

Alarm lights up continuously when the low beam headlights are on.

Direction indicators

Depending on the position of the turn signal lever, the left one flashes or right alarm. If one of the turn signal lights fails, the blinking frequency of the indicator becomes approximately twice as high as normal. This does not apply to driving with a trailer.

Rear fog light

Alarm lights up continuously when the rear fog light is on.

Particulate filter (diesel engine)

The particulate filter collects and burns particulate matter (soot) produced by the combustion of diesel fuel.

You can find out whether your vehicle is equipped with a particulate filter by looking for the code "7GG" on the vehicle data plate. The vehicle data plate is located on the trunk floor and is also glued into the service book.

Solid particles (soot) formed as a result of combustion of diesel fuel are deposited in the particulate filter. Once the filter is full, the indicator on the instrument panel will light up.

The soot in the filter must be burned off. This can be done by driving for five to ten minutes at a speed of at least 60 km/h. The indicator will go out.



If after this the indicator does not go out, the following message will appear on the information display: "Engine fault Workshop!" ("Engine — to the workshop!"). In this case, contact a specialized service station for help.

Note: For diesel vehicles equipped with a particulate filter, the use of biofuels and diesel blends is prohibited.

Incandescent lamps

Alarm lights up continuously when the ignition is turned on and goes out only after a few seconds. If the indicator light stays on or comes on while the vehicle is moving, it means a bulb in the headlights, taillights, or brake lights has failed. The following text appears on the information display: "Dipped beam front left defective!" ("The left low beam headlight is faulty"), An audible alarm also sounds as a warning (one short beep).

Steering gear with electromechanical power steering

Alarm lights up continuously for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on. If the indicator lights up while the vehicle is moving or does not go out after the ignition is turned on, this means that there is a malfunction in the electromechanical power steering mechanism.

• If the yellow indicator comes on, it means that there has been a partial failure of the power steering mechanism and the power steering effect may be reduced.
• If the red indicator lights up, this means that there has been a complete failure of the power steering mechanism and the power steering effect is lost. The red indicator lights up and is accompanied by an audible signal (three short beeps).

Caution: If your power steering gear is faulty, contact a qualified service center for assistance.

Note:

• If after restarting the engine and driving for a short time the yellow indicator goes out, then there is no need to contact a specialized service station.
• If the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, the yellow indicator lights up after the ignition is turned on. After a short run the indicator should go out.

Exhaust emission control system (exhaust gases)

Alarm lights up continuously after the ignition is turned on.

If the indicator does not go out after starting the engine, or lights up or flashes while the vehicle is moving, this means that there is a malfunction in the exhaust toxicity control system. The emergency program launched by the engine control unit will allow you to drive with increased caution to the nearest specialized service station. The following text appears on the information display: "Emission Workshop" ("Exhaust gas discharge-to the workshop!").

Control of the electronic fuel supply control system EPC (gasoline engine)

EPC alarm (electronic fuel control system) lights up for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on. If the EPC indicator does not go out after starting the engine, lights up continuously, or flashes while the vehicle is moving, this means that there is a problem with the electronic fuel supply control system (engine power regulation) there is a malfunction. The emergency program launched by the engine control unit will allow you to drive with increased caution to the nearest specialized service station. The following text appears on the information display: "Engine fault Workshop!" ("Engine — to the workshop!").

Preheating - glowing (diesel engine)

If the engine is cold, the indicator lights up after turning the key in the ignition switch to a certain position. When the indicator goes out, start the engine immediately.

If the engine is warm or the outside air temperature exceeds +5°C, the indicator lights up for approximately one second. This means that the engine can be started immediately. If the indicator does not light up or remains lit continuously, this indicates a malfunction in the preheating device. Therefore, please seek help from specialists at a service station. If the indicator starts to flash while the car is moving, it means that there is a problem with the electronic fuel supply control system (engine power regulation) there is a malfunction. The emergency program launched by the engine control unit will allow you to drive with increased caution to the nearest specialized service station. The following text appears on the information display: "Engine fault Workshop!" ("Engine — to the workshop!").

Airbag system

Alarm lights up continuously for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on. If the indicator does not go out, lights up, or flashes while the vehicle is moving, this means that there is a malfunction in the system. This also applies to the case when the indicator does not light up at all after the ignition is turned on. The following text appears on the information display: "Airbag Fault" ("Airbag system malfunction").

The readiness for operation of the airbag system is also monitored by the control unit if any of the airbags is deactivated.



If the front or side inflatable airbags or even the inflatable airbag for head protection were turned off using a diagnostic device:

• the indicator lights up after the ignition is turned on for about four seconds and then flashes for another 12 seconds at intervals of two seconds. The following text appears on the information display: "Airbag belt tensioner deactivated" ("Airbag / tensioners deactivated!").

If the airbag has been turned off using the airbag switch in the glove compartment:

• the indicator lights up after turning on the ignition for four seconds;
• the airbag being turned off is indicated by the indicator lighting up "AIRBAG OFF" ("Inflatable airbag off") on the middle section of the instrument panel.

Caution: If a malfunction occurs, have the system checked immediately at a specialized service station. Otherwise, there is a risk that the system will not work in the event of a traffic accident.

Temperature, coolant level

Alarm lights up continuously for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on.

If the alarm if the light does not go out after starting the engine, lights up, or flashes while the vehicle is moving, this indicates that the coolant temperature is too high or its level is too low. An audible alarm sounds as a warning (three short beeps). In this case, stop the car, turn off the engine and check the coolant level. Add fluid if necessary. If for any reason you are unable to provide sufficient coolant, do not continue driving the vehicle. Leave the engine off and seek assistance from a qualified service station, as serious engine damage may occur.

If the coolant level is within the specified limits, the increase in temperature may be caused by a faulty coolant fan. Check the fan fuse and replace it if necessary.

In vehicles with an information display, the indicator does not light up after the ignition is turned on, but only lights up if the coolant temperature is too high or the coolant level is too low.

If the indicator light does not go out even though the fluid level and fan fuse are normal, do not continue driving. Contact a specialized service station for assistance. The following text appears on the information display: "STOP Check coolant! Owner's manual!" ("Stop! Check the coolant! User Manual").

Attention:

• If you have to stop for technical reasons, park your car at a safe distance from the roadway, turn off the engine and turn on the hazard warning lights.
• The coolant expansion tank must be opened carefully. A hot engine's cooling system is under pressure—there's a risk of burns! Therefore, wait until the engine has cooled before removing the cap.
• Do not touch the fan: the fan may start automatically even when the ignition is off.

Windshield washer fluid level

Alarm lights up continuously after the ignition is turned on when there is not enough fluid in the windshield washer reservoir. An audible alarm sounds as a warning (one short beep). The information display shows the text: "Top Up Wash Fluid "("Add water to the washer tank!").

Fuel reserve

Alarm lights up continuously when the fuel level in the fuel tank is less than approximately 8 liters.

An audible alarm is also activated as a warning (one short beep). The following text appears on the information display: "Please refuel" ("Fill up with fuel!").

Note: The text on the information display will only disappear after refueling and a short drive.

Engine oil pressure

Alarm lights up continuously for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on.

If the indicator does not go out after starting the engine or starts flashing while the vehicle is moving, stop the vehicle and turn off the engine. Check the oil level and top up if necessary.

An audible alarm is also activated as a warning (three short beeps).

If for any reason you are unable to provide sufficient engine oil, do not continue driving your vehicle. Leave the engine off and seek professional assistance at a specialist service station, as serious engine damage may occur.

If the indicator light remains on even though the oil level is normal, do not continue driving. Do not leave the car engine running even at idle speed. Contact your nearest specialized service station for assistance. The following text appears on the information display: "STOP! Oil pressure Engine off! Owner's manual" ("STOP! Oil pressure. Engine off! User Manual").

Attention:

• If you have to stop for technical reasons, park your car at a safe distance from the roadway, turn off the engine and turn on the hazard warning lights.
• The red oil pressure warning light is not an oil level indicator! For this reason, it's important to check the oil level regularly (ideally, every time you refuel).

Trunk lid

Alarm lights up continuously if the trunk lid latch is not secured. This indicator lights up even when the ignition is off. The indicator goes out approximately 15 seconds after the vehicle is locked.

Open doors

Alarm lights up continuously if one door is open (or several doors) or the trunk lid. In vehicles with an information display, this indicator also lights when the ignition is off. The indicator goes out approximately 15 seconds after the vehicle is locked. In vehicles without an information display, this indicator goes out after the ignition is turned off.

Quantity of engine oil

If the indicator lights up , then the oil level is probably not normal. Check the oil level as soon as possible and top up if necessary.

An audible alarm is also activated as a warning (one short beep). The following text appears on the information display: "Check oil sensor!" ("Check the oil level!").

When the hood is opened for more than 30 seconds, the indicator goes out. If the engine oil has not been topped up, the indicator lights up again after approximately 100 km.

If the engine oil level sensor is faulty, an audible signal is emitted and the indicator light flashes several times.

It is necessary to have the engine checked immediately at a specialized service station. The following text appears on the information display: "Oil sensor Workshop!" ("Oil sensor-to the workshop!").

Tire pressure

Alarm will light up if the pressure in any of the tires drops significantly. Reduce speed, check and, if necessary, stabilize the pressure in all tires as soon as possible.

An audible alarm is also activated as a warning (one short beep). If the indicator light flashes, it means that there is a fault in the system. Contact a specialized service station to fix the problem.

Attention:

• If the warning light comes on, reduce speed immediately and avoid sudden changes in direction and abrupt braking. Stop your vehicle as soon as possible and check your tires and air pressure.
• Under certain circumstances (for example, sport driving techniques, driving in winter or on unpaved roads) the indicator may light up with a delay or not light up at all.

Note: If the battery has been disconnected, the indicator (1) will light after the ignition is turned on. After a short drive, the indicator should go out.

Selector lever locking device

If the indicator lights up , press the brake pedal. This is necessary if you need to move the selector lever out of the "P" or "N" position.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

Alarm indicates the system's functionality.

The indicator lights up for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on or when the engine is started. The indicator goes out once the automatic control process is completed.

System malfunction

If the alarm if the light does not go out within a few seconds after turning on the ignition, does not light up at all, or lights up while the vehicle is moving, this means that the device is not functioning properly and the vehicle is braking without the involvement of the anti-lock braking system. In this case, only the standard braking system works. Contact the nearest specialist service station immediately, adapting your driving style to the current situation, keeping in mind the fact that you do not know the extent of the damage and the limitations of the anti-lock braking system.

If the fault is of a relatively large scale, an audible alarm will also sound as a warning (three short beeps).

Malfunction in the entire braking system

If the indicator lights up together with the brake system indicator (with the handbrake lever released), then this means that not only the ABS system is faulty, but also another part of the braking system.

Caution: If the brake system warning light comes on along with the ABS warning light, stop the vehicle immediately and check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. If the fluid level drops below the "MIN" mark, do not continue driving the vehicle (danger of accident). Seek professional help.

If the brake fluid level is normal, the ABS control system may be malfunctioning. This can cause the rear wheels to lock up relatively quickly when braking. This may, under certain circumstances, cause the rear of the vehicle to tilt (danger of skidding). Drive carefully to the nearest service station to have the problem fixed.

Traction control system

The indicator lights up continuously for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on. When the regulation process occurs while the vehicle is moving, the indicator flashes. When the ASR system is operating or if there is a malfunction in the system, the indicator lights up continuously.

Since the system works in conjunction with ABS, if the ABS fails, the ASR indicator also lights up.

If the indicator lights immediately after starting the engine, the ASR system may have been deactivated due to technical issues. In this case, you can reactivate the ASR system by turning the ignition off and then back on. If the indicator goes out, this means that the ASR system is fully functional again.

Note: If the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, the indicator will come on after the ignition is turned on. After a short run the indicator should go out.

Stabilization system

The indicator lights up continuously for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on.

The ESP program also includes automatic control of the drive wheels by their skidding ASR, electronic differential lock EDS and anti-lock ABS system.

When the regulation process occurs while the vehicle is moving, the indicator flashes.

When the ESP system is switched off or if there is a malfunction in the system, the indicator lights up continuously. Since the ESP system works in conjunction with the ABS system, if the ABS system fails, the ESP indicator also comes on.

If the alarm if the light comes on immediately after starting the engine, the ESP system may have been deactivated due to technical issues. In this case, you can reactivate the ESP by turning the ignition off and then back on. If the indicator goes out, this means that the system is fully operational again.

Brake system

Alarm flashes or remains continuously lit when the brake fluid level is low, when there is a fault in the ABS system, or when the handbrake lever is applied.

If the alarm flares up (with the handbrake lever not tightened), stop the car and check the brake fluid level. The following text appears on the information display: "STOP! Brake Fluid Owner's manual" ("STOP! Brake fluid. Operating manual").

If there is a fault in the ABS system that also affects the operation of the standard braking system (for example, on the distribution of brake pressure), the device indicator lights up along with the brake system indicator. Assume that not only the ABS device is faulty, but also another part of the braking system. An audible alarm is also activated as a warning (three short beeps). When approaching a specialized service station with caution, you should press the brake pedal with greater force, taking into account the longer travel length of the brake pedal being pressed and anticipating the longer braking distance of the vehicle.

The handbrake lever is tightened

Alarm lights up when the handbrake lever is tightened. In addition, an audible alarm is triggered if the vehicle is moving for at least three seconds at a speed exceeding 6 km/h. The text appears on the information display: "Handbrake op!" ("The handbrake lever is tight!").

Attention:

• When checking the brake fluid level and opening the engine hood, follow general safety precautions.
• If the brake system indicator if the light does not go out within a few seconds after turning on the ignition or comes on while the vehicle is moving, stop the vehicle immediately and check the brake fluid level in the hydraulic brake fluid expansion tank. If the fluid level drops below the "MIN" mark, do not continue driving the vehicle (danger of accident). Seek professional help.

Fastening seat belts

Alarm lights up after the ignition is turned on to remind you to fasten your seat belt. The indicator goes out only after the driver's seat belt is fastened.

If you do not fasten your seat belt, an audible alarm will sound for six seconds after the ignition is turned on. When the vehicle speed exceeds 10 km/h, the alarm will sound until you fasten your seat belt. The following text appears on the information display: "Please fasten seatbelt!" ("Fasten your seat belt!").

Generator

Control lamp lights up after the ignition is turned on. It should go out after the engine starts.

If the warning light does not go out after starting the engine or comes on while driving, contact your nearest service center. Since this will discharge the car battery, do not turn on electrical consumers unless necessary.

Caution: If you are forced to stop due to a technical malfunction, park your vehicle at a safe distance from traffic, turn off the engine, and turn on your hazard warning lights.

Attention: If in addition to the indicator lamp the control lamp will also light up on the display (malfunction in the cooling system), stop the vehicle immediately and turn off the engine. Otherwise, engine damage may occur!

Temperature of friction clutches of DSG gearbox

If the temperature of the friction clutches of the DSG automatic transmission is too high, the symbol appears on the information display with the following text: "Gearbox overheated. Stop! Owner's man!" ("Overheating Checkpoint. Stop!"). Additionally, a warning sound is heard.

Caution: If you are forced to stop due to a technical malfunction, park your vehicle at a safe distance from traffic, turn off the engine, and turn on your hazard warning lights.

Caution: If the automatic transmission clutches are too hot, stop and turn off the engine. Wait for the symbol to disappear with a warning message, otherwise the gearbox may be damaged! Once the symbol and warning text go out, you can continue driving.
