Note: The bearing is sealed, non-adjustable, double row, and can be used for a long time without maintenance or charging. Do not remove the bearing unless absolutely necessary, as it will most likely be damaged. Never overtighten the driveshaft nut in an attempt to adjust the bearing. The inner race of the bearing is pressed into the hub, so a press or large bench vise is required for bulkheading.
Removing
1. Remove the steering knuckle from the car (Chapter 2).
2. If required, the brake disc guard can be removed (Section 9, Chapter 17).
3. Press the hub out of the steering knuckle assembly. If the outer inner race of the bearing remains on the hub, use a special universal bearing puller to remove it.
4. Remove the circlip from the steering knuckle and press out the bearing.
5. Thoroughly clean the bearing, steering knuckle and hub Check all components for damage and signs of wear and replace if necessary. Carefully check the condition of the wheel bolt threads. Bearings should be changed after each removal (see Note at the beginning of this Chapter), but if they seem suitable for further use, check them out as follows. Make sure the bearing rotates smoothly and easily, without noise or binding. If possible, check outer races and balls for signs of wear, corrosion, or flaking (loss of grains of the upper layer). Make sure the retaining ring is recyclable.
Installation
6. When assembling, check (as far as it's possible), so that the bearing is filled with grease, then press it in as shown in Fig. 10.7 until it rests against the mounting collar; make sure that pressure is applied only to the outer ring of the bearing.
7. Establish a lock ring in a flute of a rotary fist.
8. Keep track of things. so that the inner race of the bearing is supported as shown in Fig. 10.8, press the hub into the steering knuckle. Temporarily attach the steering knuckle to the drive shaft, clamp (old) tightening the drive shaft nut. regulated specifications, and check that the bearing rotates smoothly and easily with no play.
9. Install the brake disc guard if it has been removed (Section 9, Chapter 17).
10. Install the steering knuckle on the car (Chapter 2).
