Pic. 10.10. Cross section of rear wheel hub and bearings
1. Rear wheel hub; 2. External bearing; 3. Rear wheel hub/stub axle nut; 4. Cotter pin; 5. Retainer; 6. Washer; 7. Oil seal; 8. Inner bearing; 9. Stub axle.
Note: Do not remove bearings unless absolutely necessary, it will likely be damaged. You will need a press or a large bench vise to install the bearing.
Removing
1. Remove and inspect the brake drum (Section 9).
2. Remove the cover from the hub, remove the cotter pin and nut retainer, then unscrew the nut and remove the washer (Section 1).
3. Remove the hub from the stub axle (see photo). If the bearings need to be replaced, remove their inner races; if not, protect the hub assembly to keep dirt from getting into the bearings and the inner races from falling out.
4. If the stub axle is worn or damaged, replace it (Chapter 9).
5. Being careful not to scratch or damage the oil seal housing, remove the oil seal from the hub with a screwdriver; when installing, use a new one.
6. Knock the outer bearing outer race out of the hub using a hammer and a suitable punch.
7. Knock out the inner bearing outer ring from the hub.
8. Thoroughly clean the hub of dirt and grease, remove all scuffs and bumps that could interfere with assembly. Check the wheel bolt threads for cracks, wear or damage, and replace the hub if necessary.
Installation
9. When assembling, fill new bearings with good quality lithium grease. To facilitate installation, lightly coat the bearing outer races and hub bore with grease. Note that both bearings must be installed with the marked face facing out.
10. Leaning on the outer edge of the hub, press the outer ring of the new inner bearing into it until it rests against the collar.
11. Then, leaning on the inner edge of the hub, press the outer race of the new outer bearing into it.
12. Press a new oil seal into the hub, making sure that its sealing lips are facing outward (to bearings). Apply some lubricant to the lips of the seal; Wipe off excess lubricant.
13. Install the hub, washer and nut on the stub axle (see photo).
14. Install the brake drum (Section 9).
15. Adjust the bearing and install the wheel as described in Section 1 (see photo).
