Removal

1. Remove the transmission, then remove the clutch assembly as described in Section 6.

2. Block the flywheel from rotating as shown in Illustration 12.10A, or by clamping a belt between the flywheel and the cylinder block/crankcase.

3. Using a flat-head screwdriver, bend back the tabs of the flywheel mounting bolt locking plate. Loosen and remove the bolts together with the locking plate.

4. Mark the relative position of the flywheel center and crankshaft (see illustration). These marks will be used during installation to ensure the flywheel is positioned correctly as it is balanced on the engine during manufacture.

5. Remove the flywheel.

Inspection

6. If the flywheel-clutch contact surface has deep scratches, cracks or other damage, its surface can be reground or the flywheel replaced. Consult your Skoda dealer or engine repair specialist for advice.

7. If the ring gear is very worn or has broken teeth, replace it, but it is better to entrust this work to a Skoda dealer or a specialist. It is very important to heat the new ring gear to a certain temperature (180°-200°C) before installation, and not to overheat it, as this will reduce the wear resistance of the teeth.

Installation

8. Clean the contact surfaces, then install the flywheel on the crankshaft. If the old flywheel is being installed, align the marks made during removal. Note that the new flywheel can be installed in any position.

9. Place the new locking plate (see illustration), then insert the flywheel mounting bolts and tighten them by hand.

9. Place the new locking plate (see…

10. Lock the flywheel using the method used during dismantling and tighten the mounting bolts with the tightening force specified Specifications. Secure the bolts by bending the tabs of the locking plate onto their heads (see illustrations).
