Removing
1. Remove the transmission, then remove the clutch assembly as described in Section 6.
2. Block the flywheel from rotation, as shown in illustration 12.10A, or by clamping the belt between the flywheel and the cylinder block / crankcase.
3. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry out the tabs on the locking plate of the flywheel mounting bolts. Loosen and remove the bolts together with the blocking plate.
4. Mark the relative position of the center of the flywheel and crankshaft (see illustration). These marks will be used during installation to ensure that the flywheel is correctly positioned as it is balanced on the engine during manufacture.
5. Remove the flywheel.
Inspection
6. If the contact surface of the clutch flywheel has deep scratches, cracks or other damage, its surface can be re-sharpened or the flywheel replaced. Consult a Skoda dealer or an engine repair specialist for advice.
7. If the ring gear is badly worn or there are broken teeth, replace it, but this work is best left to a Skoda dealer or a specialist. It is very important to heat the new ring gear to a certain temperature before installation (180°-200°С), and at the same time do not overheat it, as the wear resistance of the teeth will decrease.
Installation
8. Clean the contact surfaces, then install the flywheel on the crankshaft. If the old flywheel is installed, align the marks made during the removal of the label. Please note that the new flywheel can be installed in any position.
9. Place the new blocking plate (see illustration), then insert the flywheel mounting bolts and tighten them by hand.
10. Block the flywheel using the method used during dismantling, and tighten the fastening bolts with a tightening torque regulated specifications. Secure the bolts by bending the tabs of the blocking plate onto their heads (see illustrations).
11. Install the clutch as described in Section 6, then remove the locking tool and install the transmission as described in Section 7.
