Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition off. Remove the air filter if it is installed above the gearbox. Open the clamp "see arrow" and remove the shift handle together with the cover. Remove the ashtray.
Unscrew the nuts "see arrows" of the gearshift housing attachment.
Remove the lock washer "3" of the gear shift cable from the gear shift lever "1".

Remove the lock washer "4" of the gear selector cable from the intermediate lever "2". Remove the gear selector cable and the gear shift drive cable from the journal "see arrows".

Remove the gearshift drive cable from the journal. To prevent damage to the gear selection cable, separate the drive cable lock from the gear selection cable before removing. Pull the locking mechanism forward as far as it will go in the "direction of arrow 1" and then lock it by moving it to the left in the "direction of arrow 2". Remove the intermediate lever together with the drive cable lock.
Further for all cars
Remove the drive cable counter support from the gearbox "see arrows", if necessary, first release the hose line "A" from the clamps on the holder "B". If present, remove the lower noise-insulating engine casing.
Remove the left and right underbody trims "see arrows". Remove the tunnel crossbars under the exhaust system.
Release all pipes from the clamps on the heat shield -see arrows A-. Cut the bandage "see arrow B". Support the exhaust system from the front.
Note: The decoupling elements in the exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise they may be damaged.
Disconnect the exhaust system from the clamping sleeve "see arrows". Disconnect the rear muffler "2" from the retaining loops and remove. Remove the exhaust pipe.
For vehicles with all-wheel drive
Remove the heat shield "2" of the propeller shaft. Remove the propeller shaft.
For all cars
Release the clamps "see arrows" and remove the heat shield. Move the gearshift housing down and remove it with the drive cables.
Installation
Reinstall in reverse order. The holes in the drive cable locks have different diameters. Apply a small amount of grease "G 000 450 02" on the journals "see arrows" of the gearshift lever "1" and the locking lever "2". After each removal, replace the lock washers "3" and "4". Secure the gearshift drive cable with the lock washer "3", and the gear selection cable with the lock washer "4" (with an intermediate lever made of metal).

The intermediate lever and cable retainer must be mounted together. Insert the gear selector cable into the drive cable retainer.
Continued for all switching mechanisms
Align the gearshift housing parallel to the body. The distance to the body should be the same on both sides. Replace the clamp "see arrow".
For vehicles with all-wheel drive
Install the cardan shaft.
Further for all cars
Assemble the exhaust system without creating stress and install the tunnel crossbars. Install the lower engine noise-insulating casing. Install the ashtray. Install the air filter, if it was removed.
Note: When disconnecting and connecting the battery ground wire, additional work must be performed.
Connect the battery wire to ground.
