Pic. 9.18. The location of the handbrake cable in the hinged part of the lever
1. Locknut; 2. Adjusting nut; 3. Cable compensator; 4. Cable; 5. Hinge part of the lever; 6. Retaining ring (where available).
Removing
1. With the vehicle parked on a level surface, turn off the ignition, select first gear or reverse, and block the front wheels so that the vehicle cannot move after the handbrake is released.
2. Loosen the plastic cover of the handbrake lever, then unscrew the adjusting nut and locknut to disconnect the cable from the lever (see section 1). Tie a piece of twine to the end of the rope.
3. Jack up the rear of the vehicle and place it securely on axle stands.
4. Release the cable from the brackets securing it to the fuel tank (see photo) and from a coupler that secures the cable to the trailing arm of the rear suspension.
5 Remove the nut securing the cable guide to the rear suspension torsion bar (see photo), then pull the cable down, away from the bottom and untie the twine, leaving it hanging in the guide until assembled.
6. Remove the brake drum (see chapter 20).
7. Compressing the spring, unhook the cable from the working lever on the driven brake shoe. Disconnect the cable from the drum brake support shield by releasing it from the guide, then knock out the cable housing bushing (see photo).
Inspection
8. Check cable for signs of wear and damage and replace if necessary; do not forget to rearrange the guide and other parts on the new cable.
Installation
9. Install in the reverse order of removal paying attention to the following:
- a) Using twine, pull the front end of the cable into the vehicle interior. Install the adjusting nut and locknut and tighten the clips that secure the cable to the fuel tank.
- b) Lay the cable along the bottom to the rear of the car, tightening the nut that secures the cable guide to the rear suspension torsion beam, tightening torque, regulated specifications. Pass the end of the cable through the drum brake support plate. Using a hammer and drift, gently tap the cable housing bushing into the support plate.
- c) Following that. To ensure that the cable passes through the guide on the support plate correctly, compress its spring and connect the cable to the operating lever.
- d) Install the brake drum (see chapter 20).
- e) Adjust handbrake (see section 1).
- f) Use new zip ties to attach the cables to the trailing arms, then lower the vehicle to the ground.
