Note: See the warning at the beginning of this Section Removal, condition check and installation of the clutch assembly.

Removal

1. If the power unit is not removed from the vehicle and is not disassembled, access to the clutch release mechanism components can be achieved by removing the gearbox. The release mechanism components are shown in the illustration.

2. Unscrew the bolt securing the release fork to the release lever axis and remove the washer.

3. Disconnect the spring from the top of the axle and remove the lever from the transmission housing. Remove the fork assembly with the release bearing (try to remember its installation position), then divide into two parts (fork and bearing).

Examination

4. Check the condition of the clutch release mechanism components. Replace any defective or worn parts. Carefully inspect all contact and bearing surfaces.

5. It is good practice to replace the release bearing regardless of its condition. If you are in a tight financial situation, check the bearing for freedom of rotation and the condition of its contact surface. If any defects are found, the bearing must be replaced.

6. The worn clutch release lever axle bushing must be replaced. The old bushing is knocked out of its seat using a hammer and punch. To fit the new bushing, use a replacement head of the appropriate size or a piece of pipe of the appropriate diameter as a mandrel (the mandrel should rest only against the outer edge of the end surface of the sleeve).

Installation

1. Clean all components thoroughly, removing all traces of old sealant from the clutch release fork and the threaded portion of its bolt. Make sure that the release lever shaft bushing is seated correctly in the gearbox housing.

2. Apply a thin layer of high-temperature grease such as Kluber Microlube GL202, GL261 or GL262, or Mobil lithium 932 or 933 to the contact surfaces of the lever shaft, release fork and release bearing. Try not to allow grease to come into contact with the friction linings of the clutch disc.

5. Lightly lubricate the threaded portion of the fork mounting locking screw with a suitable sealant (the best sealant to use is Tree bond or Aldrit). Achieve alignment in the fork and the lever axis, then carefully screw the bolt in. After making sure that the bolt is seated correctly in the holes, tighten it to the required force.

6. Attach the spring to the top of the release lever. Before installing the gearbox onto the engine, make sure the clutch release mechanism is functioning properly.
