Note: Before starting work, refer to the precautions in Chapter 1.
Warning: The following procedure simply relieves pressure in the fuel system. Remember that fuel is present in the system components.
1. The fuel system includes the in-tank fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injector, throttle body, fuel pressure regulator, and metal pipes and flexible hoses that connect these components. All contain fuel that is under pressure when the engine is running and/or the ignition is on. Pressure remains in the system for some time after the ignition is turned off and must be relieved before the components are disconnected. Allow the engine to cool completely before starting.
2. Proceed as described in Section 12, locate and remove the fuel lift pump relay. Alternatively, locate and remove the fuel lift pump fuse from the fuse box.
3. With the fuel pump disconnected, crank the engine with the starter for about ten seconds. The engine may start and run for a while, wait until it stalls. When cranking the engine with the starter, the fuel injector must be open to significantly reduce the fuel pressure.
4. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
5. Place a suitable container under the relevant connection to be broken.
6. Loosen the connection slowly to avoid sudden pressure release, place a rag around the connection. Once the pressure is completely released, disconnect the fuel line. Plug it with a plug to reduce fuel loss and prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.
