Removal
1. Support the front wheels with chocks, then jack up the rear of the car and place it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum (see Chapter Brake system). On models equipped with ABS, unbolt the wheel sensor and, without disconnecting the electrical wiring, move it away from the hub assembly.
3. To minimize brake fluid loss, remove the cap from the brake master cylinder reservoir, place a piece of polyethylene film underneath it and screw it back on tightly to achieve the required seal. Alternatively, clamp the flexible brake hose as close to the wheel cylinder as possible.
4. Wipe the outside of the brake pipe union, loosen the union nut and carefully separate the pipe from the wheel cylinder. Immediately seal the open ends of the pipe and union to prevent dirt from getting into the system. Wipe up any spilled fluid with a rag.
5. Loosen the brake shield assembly mounting bolts and separate the latter from the rear axle journal. Remove the axle journal assembly from the vehicle. Temporarily secure the brake shield to the axle with a pair of bolts to prevent the parking brake drive cable from being pulled out.
6. Check the journal assembly for mechanical damage, burrs and nicks. Replace if necessary.
Note: Do not attempt to straighten a bent journal under any circumstances.
Installation
1. Carefully clean the mating surfaces of the bridge, the trunnion assembly and the brake shield. Check the condition of the shield, if necessary, remove any roughness using a file or fine-grained sandpaper.
2. Place the axle assembly with the brake shield in its regular place, screw in the mounting bolts and tighten them diagonally to the required force.
3. Wipe the brake pipe and connect it to the rear of the wheel cylinder. Tighten the union nut securely.
4. Remove the clamp that pinches the brake hose/remove the plastic film from under the brake master cylinder reservoir cap, then install the brake drum and bleed the hydraulic circuit (see Chapter Brake system). On models equipped with ABS, reinstall the wheel sensor.
