1. Remove the brake drum (see chapter Brake system).
2. Using a flat head screwdriver, remove the oil seal from the brake drum assembly - try to remember how it was installed.
3. Remove the inner bearing from the drum.
4. Support the assembly and knock out the outer bearing race from it.
5. Turn the drum over and knock out the inner bearing race.
6. Thoroughly clean the seat in the drum, completely removing all traces of dirt and old grease. Remove burrs, burrs and roughness with fine-grained sandpaper. Carefully inspect the surface for cracks and other signs of wear. If necessary, replace the component. Replacement of bearings and stuffing box is mandatory, regardless of their condition, since the outer races are inevitably destroyed during dismantling. Prepare new bearings, oil seal and special multipurpose grease.
7. Lightly lubricate the outer races of the bearings with clean engine oil before installation to facilitate seating.
8. Supporting the drum securely, fit the outer race of the outer bearing into place. Tap the clip firmly into the receiving socket, making sure that it fits squarely. As a mandrel, use a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter - the mandrel should rest exclusively on the outer edge of the clip.
9. Turn the drum over and, proceeding in the same order, install the outer race of the inner bearing into it.
10. Make sure both outer races are properly seated, then wipe the assembly thoroughly.
11. Pack both tapered roller bearings with grease, also grease their outer races.
12. Fit the inner bearing into your outer race.
13. Insert the new oil seal with the jaws inward into the receptacle on the back of the drum.
14. Sit the gland flush with the surface of the drum, or until it stops at the back of the latter. If necessary, the gland can be knocked into the socket using a mandrel made from a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter. Remember that the mandrel should only rest against the hard outer edge of the stuffing box.
15. Turn the drum over and seat the outer tapered roller bearing in its outer race. Install the toothed washer.
16. Pack the hub bearings with grease and reinstall the brake drum assembly (see chapter Brake system).
