2. After measuring the longitudinal stroke of the shaft, evaluate its axial play. The dial gauge should be secured to the cylinder block coaxially with the shaft, pressing the plunger against the end of the journal of the latter. Otherwise, the procedure is identical to that described for the camshaft. If the measurement result exceeds the specified value, Specifications limit value for the camshaft, replace the intermediate shaft.

5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the cylinder block and check the condition of the drive gear on its end. If defects or signs of excessive wear of the teeth are detected, the shaft will have to be replaced.

6. If there have been any leaks through the shaft seal, check the condition of the shaft journal surface.

Installation

1. Lubricate the journals and drive gear with oil, then carefully insert the shaft into the cylinder block.

2. Press the new seal into the shaft flange seat. Insert the new sealing ring into the groove on the inside of the flange.

3. Lubricate the inner lips of the seal with clean engine oil and fit the flange onto the shaft journal. Make sure the sealing ring is seated correctly, then screw in the mounting bolts and tighten them to the required torque. Check the free rotation of the intermediate shaft.

4. Install the intermediate shaft gear wheel in place and tighten its mounting bolt to the required torque.
