- A) Make sure the ignition timing is set correctly (Chapter 4).
- b) Make sure the spark plugs are in good condition and the electrode gaps are properly adjusted (Chapter 4).
- c) Make sure the throttle cable is properly adjusted (Section 4).
- d) Make sure the air filter element is clean and in good condition.
- e) Make sure there are no leaks in the air intake system.
- f) Make sure there are no leaks in the exhaust system.
- g) Make sure all electrical equipment is turned off.
- h) Make sure the valve clearances are adjusted correctly (Chapter 1).
12. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
Note: The adjustment must be made within two minutes without stopping the engine. If this fails, or if the radiator fan turns on, wait until it turns off and remove excess fuel from the intake manifold by increasing the engine speed to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times, and then return the engine to idle.
13. If the vehicle is not equipped with a tachometer, connect an external tachometer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Note the idle speed, and compare it with the data in Specifications value.
14. The idle speed adjustment screw is located on the left rear side of the carburetor (when viewed from above). It is the lower of the two long adjustment screws, and rests directly on the throttle linkage (photo). Rotate the screw to achieve the correct idle speed.
15. The idle mixture is set at the factory, and in theory does not require any further adjustment. If due to changes in engine condition (soot, cylinder wear, etc.) or after overhauling the carburetor, the mixture has become incorrect, it can be adjusted. Note, however, that an exhaust gas analyzer will be required to check the mixture and adjust it to the required level of accuracy (CO meter). If a suitable tool is not available, contact your dealer.
16. If you have access to an exhaust gas analyzer, check the CO level following the manufacturer's instructions. If adjustment is necessary, turn the mixture screw, which is located in a deep recess under the idle speed adjustment screw (photo).
17. After making the adjustment, disconnect the instruments and install the components that were removed to gain access.
