Many of the sensors in the engine management system provide information that is used by both the fuel system and the ignition system. This Section discusses only those sensors that detect the operation of the ignition system only.

Detailed information on other sensors is provided in the relevant Parts of the Chapter Power supply system. These include the coolant temperature sensor, the intake air temperature/pressure sensor and the throttle potentiometer with an idle speed stabilization switch built into it.

Knock sensor

Removal

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. The sensor is installed at the rear of the cylinder block. Access to it from above is extremely limited (especially on 1.6L models). if the sensor is equipped with a heat shield, use a wrench to unscrew the bolt securing the latter.

3. Disconnect the knock sensor wiring connector.
3. Disconnect the knock sensor wiring connector.

3. Disconnect the knock sensor wiring connector.

4. Unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the sensor.

Installation

Installation is performed in the reverse order. The mounting bolt must be tightened strictly with the required force - the correct functioning of the sensor depends on this.

Bosch Mono-Motronic System

1. The sensor is installed on top of the manual transmission housing.

2. Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector located in the bracket attached to the thermostat housing. Release the connector plug from the bracket.

This system uses a Hall sensor built into the distributor assembly. Since replacing the sensor requires disassembling the distributor, it is best to leave this task to qualified auto service technicians.
