Carburetor models
1. One of the distinguishing features of contactless ignition systems is the high stability of the basic ignition timing once set. During the operation of the car, the initial angle practically does not change.
2. The need to adjust the basic settings arises after replacing the ignition distributor, belt / chain or timing gears / sprockets.
3. Checking the setting of the ignition timing is carried out when deviations occur in the operation of the engine, or when fuel consumption increases.
4. Connect the stroboscope according to the manufacturers instructions. The strobe inductive sensor terminal is connected to the BB wire on the right. Power is supplied directly from the battery terminals.
5. Start the engine, preheated to normal operating temperature, and let it idle.
6. Direct the beam of light produced by the strobe light to the mark on the crankshaft adjusting pulley and the index scale on the timing cover. The total scale range is 0°÷20°, the division value is 5°. to make the label easier to read "5°" on the cover, as well as the mark on the pulley, can be distinguished with chalk or white paint.
7. The basic value of the ignition timing must be between 0°and 4°, otherwise, turn off the engine and loosen the bolt on the distributor housing. Then start the engine again and, observing the marks illuminated by the stroboscope, achieve their correct alignment by rotating the distributor housing (To avoid the risk of electric shock, handle only the metal body of the distributor, and never its cover). Turning the distributor counterclockwise leads to an increase in the ignition timing, and vice versa.
8. Having finished the adjustment, turn off the engine and firmly tighten the bolt on the distributor housing, making sure that the latter is not accidentally displaced.
Models equipped with a fuel injection system
On models equipped with fuel injection systems, the ignition timing is constantly monitored by the ECU of the engine management system. Manual adjustment is not provided and, if necessary, can only be made using special electronic equipment. There is no need to talk about the base value due to the fact that this parameter is continuously adjusted by the ECU in order to maintain idle speed stability (see Section general information).
