Right oil seal (pulley side)
1. Remove the crankshaft pulley (see Section Removing, checking the condition and installing the front cover, timing chain and sprockets).
2. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry the oil seal out of the timing chain cover. Take care not to damage the sealing surfaces of the cover and crankshaft trunnion.
3. Alternatively, drill or punch a couple of small holes in the end face of the gland and drive self-tapping screws into them. Now you can remove it from the cover by grasping the heads of the screws with pliers.
4. Thoroughly wipe and grind the walls of the stuffing box seat, as well as the surface of the crankshaft trunnion - any roughness, burrs and scuffs that can lead to a quick failure of the new stuffing box should be removed from the sealed surfaces.
5. Lubricate the lips of the new oil seal with clean engine oil, and press / tap the latter with the lips into the socket in the casing flush with the outer surface of the timing chain cover. As a mandrel for seating the stuffing box, you can use an end head of the appropriate size or a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter, which should rest only on the hard outer edge of the end surface of the stuffing box.
6. Use a rag to collect all traces of oil, then install the crankshaft pulley (see Section Removing, checking the condition and installing the front cover, timing chain and sprockets). Note that when fixing the crankshaft from turning during the installation of the pulley, it is necessary to remove the oil pan in order to be able to control the position of the thrust washer.
Left oil seal (flywheel side)
1. Remove the flywheel (see Section Removal, check of a condition and installation of a flywheel).
2. Carefully pierce or drill two holes in the end surface of the stuffing box and screw the self-tapping screws into them. Remove the oil seal from its seat in the cylinder block wall by grasping the screw heads with pliers.
3. Thoroughly wipe and grind the walls of the stuffing box seat, as well as the surface of the crankshaft trunnion - any roughness, burrs and scuffs that can lead to a quick failure of the new stuffing box should be removed from the sealed surfaces.
4. Lubricate the lips of the new oil seal with clean engine oil, and press / tap the latter with the sponges inward into the socket in the crankcase.
5. Manually put a new oil seal on the crankshaft trunnion, carefully moving it over the shoulders and press it into the socket so that the outer end is evenly pressed around the entire perimeter of the thrust surface of the shoulders. If necessary, the gland can be knocked into the socket with a soft-faced hammer.
6. Remove any remaining grease and reinstall the flywheel (see Section Removal, check of a condition and installation of a flywheel).
