Petrol models
- a) In no case do not fill cars equipped with a catalytic converter with leaded fuel - the lead contained in it is deposited on the surface of the working element of the converter made of valuable metals, gradually reducing the efficiency of the latter and eventually leading to its failure;
- b) Pay due attention to the regular maintenance of the components of the power and ignition systems;
- c) In the event of a misfire, the vehicle should be abandoned, or at least reduced to a minimum until the cause of the malfunction is eliminated;
- d) In no case do not start the car engine by towing it, as in this case unburned fuel will accumulate in the converter, where it can ignite later and disable the working element;
- e) Do not turn off the ignition at high engine speeds;
- f) The appearance of a slight smell of hydrogen sulfide at the first stage of operation of a car equipped with a new catalytic converter is quite natural and should not cause concern (the use of poor quality fuel leads to an increase in the intensity of the smell);
- g) The service life of the catalytic converter during normal operation of the car is usually between 80,000 km (50,000 miles) up to 160,000 km (100,000 miles) run.
Petrol and diesel models
- h) Do not use any fuel additives;
- i) If thick blue smoke appears on the exhaust, indicating burnout of the engine oil, the operation of the car should be suspended;
- j) Remember that the operating temperature of the catalytic converter is very high - be careful when doing any work under the car, do not park the car on areas covered with combustible materials (dry grass, fallen leaves, etc.);
- k) Remember that the catalytic converter is a fragile device - handle it with extreme care.
