Fastening the protective cover of the steering gear

1. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle (see subsection 8.4.2).
2. Clean the steering gear from dirt, especially in the areas where the protective covers are located.
3. Remove the outer 3 (see figure Steering gear parts (non-power steering)) and internal 5 clamps for fastening the protective cover.
4. Move protective cover 4 away from the steering gear housing.
5. Clamp rack 2 (see figure Disconnecting the steering rod from the rack (without amplifier)) the steering gear in a vice with soft metal pads so that the rack teeth do not fall into the vice.
6. Disconnect steering rod 4 from rack 2 by unscrewing cap nut 3.
7. Measure the length of the old rod. This will help to approximately maintain the wheel alignment when installing the tip on the new tie rod.
8. After unscrewing tip 1 (see figure Steering gear parts (non-power steering)), remove protective cover 4 from rod 6. Replace a protective cover that is torn, cracked or has lost elasticity.
9. Install protective cover 4 with clamps 3 and 5 on new rod 6 and screw tip 1 onto the rod in accordance with the previously measured size.
Caution! Use only original design protective cover mounting clamps from reputable manufacturers.
10. Connect the steering rod to the rack by screwing the cap nut onto the rack.
11. Clean the mounting locations of the protective cover 4 on the steering gear housing and the rod.
12. Lubricate the grooves where the protective cover fits with grease.
13. Place protective cover 4 on the mounting points, making sure that it is not twisted.
14. Secure the protective cover 4 (see the figure Fastening the protective cover of the steering gear) with new clamps 2 using special pliers 3.
15. Install the steering gear on the vehicle. In this case, adjust the position of the tie rod end when connecting it to the pivot arm.
16. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles.
The tightening torque for fastening the steering rod to the steering rack is 80 Nm.
