Noise Elimination Guidelines
A closed hydraulic system is a source of operating noise. Noise from the power steering always occurs when the steering wheel is turned to the extreme position; the steering wheel can only remain in this position for a short time. Increased pump noise in extreme steering positions (in the parking lot) is determined by the system and cannot be prevented by technical means. If noise occurs that differs from the normal noise and cannot be eliminated by technical means, the following measures must be taken: Check the level of working fluid for hydraulic systems in the receiver of the pump unit. Check the pressure of the pumping unit. Check the pressure line, the return line on the power steering housing and the pump unit (presence of air in the system). Check that the pressure line and return line are not pinched at any point and that they do not come into contact with other parts of the vehicle. Check the power steering gear housing's fastening to the Strelka suspension mounting beam. Tighten the screws if necessary.
Checking the fastening of the TRW power steering pump unit
Check the fastening of the mounting bracket with pump unit "3" to the Strelka body. Tighten the screws if necessary. Check the attachment of the mounting bracket to the pump unit and, if necessary, tighten the nuts to the specified torque, while holding the rubber supports.
Important: To be able to check for damage to the rubber mounts, the pump unit and mounting bracket must be removed.
Remove the power steering pump unit. Check that the rubber supports (3 pcs.) are not damaged, e.g. cracks, metal plate with threaded pin coming off the rubber support. Damaged rubber mounts must be replaced.

Automatic control (self-diagnosis) power steering
Testing of the TRW power steering system can be carried out using automatic control (self-diagnosis). Automatic control (self-diagnosis) can be carried out using a diagnostic device. Power steering control unit, hydraulic device (electric motor and gear shaft:), and the reservoir for the working fluid for the hydraulic systems form one non-disassemblable part, called the power steering pump unit. Only the hydraulic fluid reservoir can be replaced. The power steering pump unit is located in the front part of the engine compartment on the left, between the bumper and the wheel cover. The automatic control system applies only to the electrical and electronic components of the power steering mechanism. The control unit recognizes faults during vehicle operation and loads them into permanent memory. It protects the recording even if the battery voltage disappears. After the ignition is turned on, the "K92" power steering indicator lights up. At the beginning of this period, an internal test cycle is in progress. Before troubleshooting can begin, automatic testing must be performed. If faults are loaded into the fault memory, they can be displayed or printed using a diagnostic tool.

If the "K92" power steering indicator "arrow" does not go out after starting the engine, then faults may be loaded into the fault memory. The instrument panel may differ in appearance depending on the vehicle's equipment.
