Vehicle lateral slope: "neutral position"

If the measured values are outside the tolerance limits of the required values for the front and rear suspensions, the cause may be that the vehicle is parked at an angle. Vehicles with right-hand drive or eg. cars with automatic transmission may sit slightly crooked. This is a normal condition caused by the arrangement of the unit and the associated mass distribution. After pumping the car on the springs several times, wait until it reaches a state of rest.

Important: Determining the "a" dimension should only be done on the rear suspension.

Measure the dimension "a" on the left and right sides of the vehicle. "a" to the left is the left side of the vehicle, "a" to the right is the right side of the vehicle, and a = 90°. Compare the dimensions "a" to the left and "a" to the right. The difference between the dimensions "a" to the left and "a" to the right must not exceed ±5.0 mm. Correct any deviations exceeding the permitted tolerance of +5.0 mm.

Measure the dimension «a» on the left and right…

If the upper tolerance limit is exceeded, e.g. + 8.0 mm, it is necessary to correct the difference on the rear suspension by placing a load in the trunk on the corresponding side. If the lower tolerance limit is exceeded, for example -8.0 mm, it is necessary to correct the difference in the front suspension of the cargo space in the engine compartment on the shock absorber strut of the corresponding side. It is advantageous to use, for example, as cargo. sandbags weighing 10 kg each.

Checking and, accordingly, aligning the wheel alignment on the front axle

The camber angle of the wheel cannot be adjusted, it can only be straightened. If the values are outside the tolerance limits, the vehicle's transverse slope must first be checked and, if necessary, levelled. The wheel camber can be evenly adjusted within the tolerance range by shifting the suspension mounting beam brackets. Loosen screws "1" and "2".

The camber angle of the wheel cannot be adjusted,…

Move the suspension beam bracket so that the wheel alignment on both sides is the same. Then check the longitudinal tilt angle of the kingpin axis backwards. The longitudinal tilt angle of the kingpin axis backwards may change as a result of displacement of the suspension mounting beam bracket. Tighten the suspension beam bracket with new bolts.

Rear axle camber control

The camber angle on the rear axle cannot be adjusted. If the values are outside the tolerance limits, the vehicle's transverse slope must first be checked and, if necessary, levelled. If the measured values are still outside the tolerance limits, the bridge beam must be checked for damage and replaced if necessary.

Rear axle wheel alignment check

The rear axle wheel alignment cannot be adjusted. If the values are outside the tolerance limits, it is necessary to first check and, accordingly, level the transverse slope of the vehicle. If the measured values are still outside the tolerance limits, the bridge beam must be checked for damage and replaced if necessary.

Checking and, accordingly, adjusting the toe-in of the front axle wheels

If the values are outside the tolerance limits, the vehicle's transverse slope must first be checked and, if necessary, levelled. Loosen lock nut "1".

If the values are outside the tolerance limits,…

Adjust the toe-in by turning the left or right steering linkage rods, respectively. In case of a relatively large difference, the toe-in should be adjusted by turning the left and right steering linkage rods simultaneously. Place an open-end wrench on the Allen key. Make sure the tie rod ends are not twisted or kinked after turning the steering linkage. Twisted or kinked tie rod ends will quickly become unusable. After tightening the lock nut, check the alignment again. It may happen that after tightening nut "1", the set value will change slightly. However, this value must lie within the tolerance field of the required value. If this is not the case, then it is necessary to adjust the wheel alignment again.

Control of the steering wheel angle to the left and right

This control must be carried out only if: the left and right extreme positions differ from each other by more than 2°, based on the center of the steering wheel, in any of the extreme positions there is contact of the tire with the parts of the front suspension or body, the turning diameter of the car to the left differs from the turning diameter to the right, the distance between the parts of the front suspension and the tire "arrow" must be the same on both sides when turning the steering wheel to the extreme position on both sides. If the distances are the same, then it is possible to adjust them by turning the left and right steering linkage rods.

This control must be carried out only if: the…

Example: The distance between the front suspension parts and the tire on the right is less than on the left.

Loosen the lock nuts on the steering linkage rods. Turn the left steering rod, unscrew it a little from the tip (from the left rod). Turn the right steering rod (screw it the same distance into the tie rod end). Check overall toe-in. After completing the adjustment, the overall toe-in should match the specified required value! Tighten the locknuts. It may happen that after tightening the lock nuts, the set value will change slightly. However, this value must lie within the tolerance field of the required value. If this is not the case, then it is necessary to adjust the overall wheel alignment again. Make sure that after turning the steering linkage rods, the cuffs do not remain twisted or untwisted!

Directional Deviation Detection

Important: The values below are for illustrative purposes only.

If both toe values have the same signs (+/+ or -/-), then the smaller value is subtracted from the larger one and the result should be divided by two.

Wheel toe-in valueWheel toe-in value
+15'+5'

  • 15'-5'= 10'
  • 10': 2 = 5'

The deviation of the rear axle's direction of travel from straight ahead is 5'. If the toe-in values have opposite signs (+/-), they are added together and the result is divided by two.

Wheel toe-in valueWheel toe-in value
+15'-5'

  • 15'+ 5'= 20'
  • 20': 2 = 10'

The deviation of the direction of movement of the rear axle from the straight line = 10'. The corresponding result represents the actual deviation of the direction of movement of the rear axle from the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.
