Disconnecting the steering rod from the rack (with amplifier)
1 – steering gear housing; 2 – rack; 3 – cap nut; 4 – steering rod
1. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle (see subsection 8.5.2).
2. Clean the steering gear from dirt, especially in the areas where the protective covers are located.
3. Remove the outer 3 (see figure Steering gear parts (with amplifier)) and internal 5 clamps for fastening the protective cover.
4. Move protective cover 4 away from the steering gear housing. When removing the right tie rod, also move the protective cover of the left tie rod to gain access to the special flats that hold the rack from turning.
Caution! When disconnecting the steering linkage from the power steering rack, never clamp the rack in a vice, as this may damage the steering gear seals.
5. Disconnect the steering rod 4 (see the figure Disconnecting the steering rod from the rack (with amplifier)) from rack 2, unscrewing cap nut 3 and holding rack 2 from turning on the left side by the chamfers.

6. Measure the length of the old rod. This will help to approximately maintain the wheel alignment when installing the tip on the new tie rod.
7. After unscrewing tip 1 (see figure Steering gear parts (with amplifier)), remove protective cover 4 from rod 8. Replace protective cover 4 that is torn, cracked or has lost elasticity.
8. Install protective cover 4 with clamps 3 and 5 on new rod 8 and screw tip 1 onto the rod in accordance with the previously measured size.
Caution! Use only original design protective cover mounting clamps from reputable manufacturers.
9. Connect the steering rod to the rack by screwing the cap nut onto the rack and holding the rack from turning on the left side by the flats.
10. Clean the protective boot mounting areas on the steering gear housing and rod.
11. Lubricate the grooves where the protective cover fits with grease.
12. Place protective cover 4 on the mounting points, making sure that it is not twisted.
13.Secure the protective cover 4 (see figureFastening the protective cover of the steering gear) with new clamps 2 using special pliers 3.
14. Install the steering gear on the vehicle. In this case, adjust the position of the tie rod end when connecting it to the pivot arm. Check and adjust wheel alignment if necessary.
The tightening torque for fastening the steering rod to the steering rack is 80 Nm.
