Detaching the steering rod from the rack (with amplifier)
1 - steering gear housing; 2 - rail; 3 - cap nut; 4 – steering draft
1. Remove the steering gear from the car (see subsection 8.5.2).
2. Clean the steering gear from dirt, especially in the places where the protective covers fit.
3. Remove outer 3 (see fig. Steering gear parts (with amplifier)) and inner 5 clamps for attaching the protective cover.
4. Move the protective cover 4 away from the steering gear housing. When removing the right link, also slide the protective cover of the left link to gain access to special flats to keep the rack from turning.
Attention! When disconnecting the steering rod from the rack of the power steering mechanism, in no case clamp the rack of the mechanism in a vise - the steering gear seals may be damaged.
5. Disconnect steering draft 4 (see fig. Detaching the steering rod from the rack (with amplifier)) from the rail 2 by unscrewing the cap nut 3 and at the same time keeping the rail 2 from turning on the left side by the flats.
6. Measure the length of the old rod. This will help when installing the tip on the new rod to approximately maintain the convergence of the wheels.
7. Unscrew tip 1 (see fig. Steering gear parts (with amplifier)), remove the protective boot 4 from the rod 8. Replace the protective boot 4 that is torn, cracked or has lost elasticity.
8. Install a protective cover 4 with clamps 3 and 5 on the new rod 8 and screw the tip 1 onto the rod in accordance with the previously measured size.
Attention! Use protective boot clamps only of original design and production of well-known manufacturers.
9. Connect the tie rod to the rack by screwing the cap nut onto the rack and at the same time keeping the rack from turning on the left side by the flats.
10. Clean the protective boot seats on the steering gear housing and linkage.
11. Lubricate the grooves where the protective boot fits with grease.
12. Install the protective cover 4 on the seats, making sure that it is not twisted.
13. Attach protective cover 4 (see fig. Fastening of a protective cover of the steering mechanism) new clamps 2 using special pliers 3.
14. Install the steering gear to the vehicle. At the same time, correct the position of the rod end when connecting it to the swing arm. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment.
The tightening torque for fastening the steering rod to the steering rack is 80 N·m.
