Caution: Each time the cylinder head is removed, the cylinder head mounting bolts must be replaced. When repairing the cylinder head, replace the valve stem seals regardless of their condition.
Valve train components for 1.0L, 37 kW and 1.4L, 50 kW engines
1 – valve rocker shaft axis; 2 – retaining ring; 3 – outer rocker arm axle stand; 4 – spring ring; 5 – rocker arm; 6 – adjusting screw; 7 – lock nut; 8 – small rocker arm axle stand; 9 – large rocker arm axle stand; 10 – retaining ring; 11 – spring
Camshaft of 1.0 l, 37 kW and 1.4 l, 50 kW engines
1 – push rod; 2 – hydraulic valve lifter; 3 – cylinder block; 4 – sealing ring; 5 – camshaft position sensor; 6 – screw; 7 – camshaft; 8 – key; 9 – locking plate; 10 – bolts
Removal the hydraulic valve lifter
1 – hydraulic valve lifter; 2 – hook
1. Remove the cylinder head (see subsection 2.7).
2. Remove the intake pipe (see subsection 4.11) and exhaust manifold.
3. Remove the oil seals (see subsection 2.9).
4. Remove the valves from the head, marking them first to avoid confusion during installation.
5. For 1.0L 37kW and 1.4L 50kW engines, proceed as follows:
- mark the struts and rocker arms to avoid confusion during installation;
- remove retaining rings 2 (see figure Valve train parts for 1.0 l, 37 kW and 1.4 l, 50 kW engines);
- remove from axle 1 struts 3, 8, 9 and rocker arms 5. If there is no need, do not unscrew;
- adjusting screws 6 and lock nuts 7 to avoid disturbing the valve adjustment;
- remove thrust rings 10, rocker arms 5 and spring 11;
- remove the rods 1 (see figure Camshaft of 1.0 l, 37 kW and 1.4 l, 50 kW engines) tappets from the 3-cylinder block and mark them so as not to mix them up during installation;
- remove the 2 valve lifters from the cylinder block. To do this, make a hook from 1.8/1.9 mm diameter wire, as shown in the figure (see figure Removing the hydraulic valve lifter). Insert the hook into the hole in the hydraulic tappet and hook the tappet. Mark the hydraulic lifters to avoid confusion during installation.
6. For the 1.9 l 74 kW TDI engine, remove the unit injectors (see subsection 4.14.4).
